I've got a m620.  IF I get a KN air filter and chop the box top, what performance increases am I looking at?
Will the bike be a lot louder?

1) Its a 620. Even with an extra 2 horse, its still a 620. Dont bother with performance gains. You got the wrong bike for that.

2) Its a lot louder. Especially when you close the throttle. If you're really into the whole ducati sound deal, then do it. thats really the only reason to.

what's louder - chopped cans or KN filter?

want to have a roar for safety, but dont want it over the top.

Thanks

On acceleration, exhaust. on decel intake

If you open the airbox you need to change the fueling, minimum CO trim adjustment, ideal, power commander with a custom map.  Do less and you will be running lean.  I am not a K&N fan when it comes to air filers.  My preference is Piper Cross.

Yep - unless you're planning to deal with the fueling issues don't bother.

And don't buy into the 'loud pipes/bikes save lives' stuff. Most bike accidents are single vehicle or a left turning car that's in front of you and probably doesn't hear the bike anyway. Don't get me wrong... I like my DP pipes. Just saying I'm not expecting them to act as a magical ward against any soccer moms too busy texting with one hand while holding their froo-froo coffee in the other
-Throttle's on the right, so are the brakes.  Good luck.

If you chop the box you also expose your bike to weather problems.  You wouldn't want to leave it out in the rain EVER.

Unless you live in the brazilian rainforest or do river crossings on your spare time, rain is not a factor to consider. I've run pods on 2 monsters for 45000 miles total and nothing has ever happened. The only time I would worry is when you are washing your bike and you directly spray into the air box. Even then I just place a few rags on top of the filter to absorb the spray. With my pods, I dont even bother doing that.

I've been stuck in plenty of deluges and the only thing I ever worry about is crashing due to the poor road conditions.

I have a completely open air box with a K&N filter, no issues.  One upside to the K&N filters is that you don't ever have to replace it.

I had an open top on my 00' 750 and never had any issues with rain. And I've riden in serious down pours. never even a stutter. Now, I run Pods and the only thing I want to do is get those fabric covers to keep the bugs from getting into the pleats. If you mess with the intake, you have to mess with the air/fuel.
