Got the S4R all back together, she fired right up.

Problem is, and it's worse now, it won't idle worth a flip.  If I give it a smidge of throttle to bring the revs up to say, 2000rpm...the idle motor will start lowering the idle back down.  It's trying to hold it around 1200.

Throttle cable is adjusted so there is little to no slop...

Not sure if there are air bleed screws on this thing or not....I was just happy to get it fired tonight and it's really to late to be blasting the 'hood with duc music so here I am....

If the TPS is for some reason out of whack, will this cause the no-idle condition?

Does this have the manual throttle advance or is idle controlled by the stepper motor?
Either way I would think TPD is integral in success of either system (with the maual easy to trick).
1200 seems like a good idle?

TAftonomos

No manual idle adjustment on this one.

I'm at a loss on this, but I'm going to try fiddling with the air bleed screws today....see if I can't get it to run a bit higher so it will stay idling.

Before I started adjusting "things", I tried to troubleshoot it again.  I found out more:

If I hold RPM's say 5000...it will sit there for a bit, maybe 5 seconds, then start to fall off. More throttle doesn't do anything, it feels like it's just leaning out bad and then when the revs get low enough it will die.

It's not cutting out like it would if the ignition just dies, but it's leaning out and then sputtering out. If I turn the key off, then back on, it will fire up and I can repeat the entire sequence again.

Tonight I went through the entire fuel system from tank to injector and back. Mine is modded a bit with quick disconnects from Omega, but I trouble-shot those and they have plenty of flow. Injectors are plugged in correctly, the "O" plug going to the horizontal injector. TPS is correct, as is the stepper motor for idle

So now I'm trying to pull out hair I don't have, and I can't for the life of me figure out why it would do this. I ran a test light on the fuel pump, it's still running/has power even when the RPM's are nosing over.

Fuel pump going bad?  ECU bad?

I'm seriously out of ideas at this point.  I'm so frustrated with the thing I'm ready to piece it out.....

Do you have VDSTS diagnostic software?

I've seen odd behavior somewhat like that when a fuel hose was perforated inside a Monster tank.
But I'm pretty sure the S4Rt has no 'rubber' lines in the tank.

I should have the DucatiDiag stuff here today...supposed to be able to do everything VDST does and some more.

There is a hard rubber line in the tank, goes from the filter to the outlet.  It popped back onto the outlet nipple without too much fuss, and appears secure.  Maybe I should replace it with a rubber line and house clamp?

Just thought of something.  When I get home today I'll rig up a fuel pressure gauge to go inline on the return side.  That ought to at least tell me if the pressure is dropping off when the thing is nosing over.   If that doesn't show me that the pressure is dropping off, I'm pretty much out of ideas (ECU went bad?)

I know nothing about your model 'bike, or about anything electronic but doesn't seem the fuel pump has been checked out completely.

You said the flow was adequate when the Qik Connects were undone. I would run that fuel through a pipe into a tank and measure litres/minute ( mindful of fire risk ).  A pump on it's way out can still deliver some flow, you should be able to obtain specified flow rates.

Next hook up an amp meter in the pump wiring and check the actual current, will tell you more than a test light.

Next I'd have the pump out for some bench testing to be done by experts. And the injectors checked.

Update -

Hooked up pressure gauge in a "T" to the return line.  The pressure when I activate the pump using the diagnostic software (And priming the system - key on) is about 12psi.

It will start, but not really run.  Holding the rev's up around 4k will produce some lean backfiring, and the RPM's will sag off as it leans out past the point of running.

I can take a pair of vice grips to the return line, squeeze it shut...and the pressure doesn't get any higher.

Unless I'm mistaken....the pump's gone bad charlie murphy!  I give it 4 thumbs down (and it sucks it failed after 2500 miles!)

I've got a 999 pump assembly here with a pump in it, but I can't seem to get the damn pump out of it.  Any ideas?
