Your experience re-packing Termi cans....

At almost 40,000 miles I suspect my Termi cans play louder music than they did when new.
There have been modifications done, so a little louder is to be expected though.

At two recent track days, only my bike and a couple track-only 999 got a db-warning.

Did anyone actually do a re-packing?
Did the old stuffing look like it needed replacing?
What did you think about the result?

I repacked after 5000 miles on the clock and a chop done by the previous owner. One can was worse than other, only warning is be careful drilling last rivet. The one strap took a ride with the rivet and got a little mangled up. The repacked helped sound, but was more a piece of mind, since I wasn't sure the condition after the previous owner chopped the cans.

The 'glass packing inside most mufflers disintegrates pretty quickly.  I've seen some badly mangled in a few a 2500 miles!  I suspect you'll gain substantial attenuation by a simple repacking.

Is it a good idea to have a layer of steel wool - to protect the glass fiber?

For this purpose - are the cans opened front, rear or both?

I've used that kit, or one very much like it.  I think the steel wool does help to keep the fiberglass from burning out.  I don't think I was able to get the SS mesh around the core tube, but this wasn't on Termi's.  I took the end cap off, then the sleeve off the lower end.  After wrapping the layers on the core, I wrapped the glass in plastic wrap, like Saran wrap, slid the outer sleeve over it then pulled out the plastic.

Had it done today [thumbsup]

We used the existing steel wool and steel mesh. The fiber wool from one Moose package was enough for both cans.
The package contained rivets, but we used some that are solid - no leaking exhaust.

Now it's a more civilized sound, but still plenty loud 8)

Very little left in there.....

I have a 20 GPR exhaust packing kits in stock with rivets. These are very high quality kits made in Italy and retail at $30. Each kit comes complete to repack two cans. I will provide these Free to DMF members but you pay the shipping which is $11.00 USPS Priority mail in the medium flat rate shipping box.

I repacked the cans on my 996 with these and I promise you the exhaust was louder when I was done. The packing was trashed in my system. The tighter you pack them the louder they are.

If the mods are cool with it this can be posted as its own topic outside of the Cycle Cat forum but I don't want to step on any toes.

Call to order. I accept American Express, Visa, Master charge and Discover.

I strongly recommend to accept this offer [thumbsup]

The exhaust flow will be better/more fluid/as intended. My idle is smoother.

Bonus for me is that my s-pipes are now closer to the bike - they used to force my foot out a little.
