Mr Earl

I went ahead and set the free play per the Haynes manual at about 1.5mm.  I'm going to remove some fluid from the reservoir, too, then see how it behaves.

The entire problem started immediately after changing the levers out, and a top-off of fluid at the same time, so I suspect the cause has to be related to that set of events.

Thanks for the advice and tips, I'll report back when (if?) these attempts work.

Just FYI for those who may run into this issue - the problem was an over-full master.  Removed about a tablespoon of brake fluid and all is well.
