M696 throwing 'CAN' line CEL code.

Does anyone know where I should start with this one?  It throws it sometimes, sometimes the CEL flickers and flashes, sometimes constant. Also, I notice that the dash and headlight will just stop working as this is happening.

Yeah, it refers to the connection between the ECU and the dash/display unit.  Are you running your 696 totally stock?  Another user on here was getting that same error intermittently when running power commander and an open exhaust.  The PC unit was mounted over the muffler and was getting too hot.  Moving it seems to have fixed the problem.  I would start by checking wiring connections and ensuring that none are getting too hot...
I don't own a Ducati...but I wrench on one.

not stock, have had DP race ECU and air filter provided with termi slip on kit from dealer for about 3K mi.

Check all your connectrs from your front to rear
bet one is loose
