Burnt plastic smell 2009 Monster 696 after 7500 mile service

Five days ago I picked up my bike from the Ducati dealership after having a 7500 mile service done which included belt replacement.  Since picking up the bike, it seems to be running considerably hotter than normal and I also smell a distinct burning smell coming from the area around the vertical timing belt. Combination of plastic or rubber, not so much oil.

Any thoughts as to what this could be?

Having put over 3,000 miles on the bike this summer, I also noticed that prior to the major service my engine temp gauge consistently stayed at 3 bars. Only occasionally would I see 4 bars, like on the freeway on hot days, in traffic or while cruising at around 70 - 80 mph.

Now after having the full service done my bike runs at 4 bars consistently and the ambient air temp is way cooler, seeing as that it is almost fall.

I was definitely NOT expecting my bike to run warmer after spending over $1,000 dollars at the dealership... or smell any suspect smells.

Any helpful advice is much appreciated friends :-)

Possible that coil reverse issue wasn't actually an issue and they switched them or when dissembled put those on backwards...
I don't own a Ducati...but I wrench on one.

Have you removed the vertical belt cover to take a look around?  Its possible they over tensioned the new belt.... maybe the idler pulley is going into meltdown?  Maybe the belt itself is rubbing somewhere?

Guessing they had your fuel tank out.... how's the clearance between the rear header and the plastic fuel pump shroud?

I would suggest calling the dealer ASAP, tell them what is going on (nicely) and ask them to pick up the bike, particularly if the bike is still under warranty.  Clearly something went wrong.  As ungeheuer said an over tightened belt or seizing bearing could be the problem.  If so, a  broken belt and a badly damaged engine could be the result.

Thanks for the responses everyone! I'm expecting a call from the store manager today. Worse comes to worse, I'll try calling before they close. I checked for the coil issue on the Horizontal coil (http://up.sur-la-toile.com/ihpS) and it is as it should be. I'm keeping a close eye on it and will be sure to post any findings here shortly.

Thanks everyone!

After talking to the store manager, he's going to have the technicians look over the bike once more durning the day tomorrow. That's super news to me.. Good service for sure.
