The great thing about buying a bike that's 10 years old that was bought at auction is how much you get to learn about it by fixing things.

My fuel light has decided to turn on for the first time with a nearly full tank. Does anyone know if o can reset it or run it down low then refill it to see if it turns off?

The fuel sender units are notoriously crappy.

My guess is that yours has gone the way of the dodo. To my knowledge the sender is glued up in epoxy or somesuch gunk, and can't be repaired, making replacement the only option.

The sender on my '00 M900 died within a couple months of owning the bike, causing the light to come on all the time. Fortunately, it was under warranty and I just had the shop deal with it. The fuel light on my 998 has never come on, even when the tank is bone-dry. I figure I'll look into it when I have to replace the pump or filter, and already have the tank opened up.

So you've a few options:

1. Replace the sender, or have a shop do it.
2. I figure you can disconnect the bulb or wire, and shut off the light. Just learn how many miles you can go before it's best to fill up.
3. Endure the irritating yellow light all the time.

you can also do what I did until I finally got a spare sender which is stick one of those little black valve stem caps in the hole around the gas light. takes care of the annoying light, but you will still see the message on the display.

Thanks for the suggestions. Worst case scenario is I'll just unplug the light.

+1 on all suggestions above.

If Fuel light is vital f your riding experience,
replace it, sender is most likely malfunctioning.
If it is not a problem use Trip meter f fuel control.

Tripometer for fuel control is the plan. My OCD wants all things right though. It's 10 years old and I've accepted not having a rear brake switch but I always use the front anyway. Just another thing to accept. In the end, I still have the Duc I always wanted, right?

A wise man once told me that the fuel light only comes on to tell you the globe for the fuel light hasn't blown. I don't pay much attention to mine.
