Author Topic: Help: How to install new timing belts - 2010 M696  (Read 2150 times)

Took my bike out for short run earlier this week but after a mile or so the engine just died. I later found out that there was a bolt that got loose inside the timing belt cover so the bolt teared off the the vertical cylinder belt and cut it in half.

I ordered the replacement belts and Google for instruction to install the new timing belts but so far I still could not find anything specific for M696. Most of the instructions I found, including an 8 min video clip from Ducatitech.com, so far are for Ducati Monsters in general.  I got the part about aligning the dot on drive timing pulley to the mark on the crank case but have problem with aligning the marks from the vertical and horizontal cylinder pulleys to the marks on the belt cover since M696 do not have marks on the belt covers. Kinda silly but where do I align the marks on the cylinder pulleys to? Thanks guys!

Probably should check if you've bent any valves first.

2010?  Have you touched any timing fasteners yourself?  Have you had a service by the dealer where the belts were adjusted or changed?  You may have a warranty or dealer responsible situation.  Speak to your dealer before doing anything.  As Speeddog said you could have bent valves or worse.

+1, dont touch a thing if you're under warranty.

BUT if you're not under a service or manufacturer warranty, there are timing marks on the case and gears. hard to see but there. IF i remember correctly. the marks are about 5 o clock on the vert, 8 o clock on the horiz and 7 o clock on the main pulleys. But that is a total guess based on my VERY stressed out memory. But the marks are there.

FOR SURE check for bent valves.

Seems like a trip to the dealer to check for bent valve(s) is a must. I bought the bike in April 2010 so the one-year warranty ran out 6 months ago. Thanks for the good advice guys!

Towed the bike to the dealer. Good thing it is still under manufacture warranty so I am covered. They will perform the leak-down test Monday to see if any of the valves got bent. They told me that piston surface and housing look fine.

BTW, I did a lot cosmetic mods to the bike but nothing has to do with belts, pulleys or timing cover. The only reason, in my mechanically clueless opinion, that the vertical belt got shredded like that was because something metal got loose inside the timing cover. In this case, it looks like a small bolt or screw about 1" long. Thank you all for your good advice! I will post to follow up when everything is said and done.

Just brought her home and all is well. The only thing the dealer had to replace was her timing belts, no other damage. Parts and labor cost around $300 but Ducati was nice enough to pick up the tab. I only had to pay for towing. Once again, thank you all for your help! Happy riding!
