Real Recognize Real

My '94 M900 started running poorly yesterday and today, primarily at low speeds. The bike will frequently but not always cutoff at idle and surge below 3.5k rpms. It was also involved in a hit and run yesterday morning in my apt parking lot so it probably was laying on the ground for approx 6 hours. I double checked electrical connections, fuel lines (recently replaced, no pinched lines), vacuum fuel pump and recently filled up with 87 octane. Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

bad gas recently?....possibly sediment from in the tank stirred around into main fuel and the filter after the dumping of the bike?....a ground knocked loose and the coil not firing as it should due to bad connection...

could be any number of things....

I checked the grounds and they are secure. I purchased a can of Sea Foam and added some to the fuel in hopes of curing any fuel/sediment problems. If it's a sediment problem, I assume it will alleviate itself with time, right? Btw, I pulled my plugs and they were really fouled - a new set were installed. Bike starts up a little easier now. Any other opinions?

If the bike was on its' side for 6 hours it's very possible you loaded up the cylinders with fuel which fouled the plugs.

I'd check to make sure the oil level isn't high, and that the oil doesn't smell gassy.

If either, I'd change the oil and filter.

The bike had actually been low on oil (don't ask how I know ;) ), and I think by now it's due for a change anyway. If the plugs were fouled tho, would they clean themselves up?

Plugs can clean themselves up a little if you can ride it hard for a while.

Difficult this time of year on the street in most of the country.

How is the crank case breather setup on the 900?  Would it have filled the airbox with oil after laying on its side for that long?

Dito on dp's comments re fuel in the oil too.

Don't think it would be possible...although if it was on the right side some could get in the system
