Countersprocket play?

I bought a new chain, front and rear sprockets from cacycleworks.
Front is a steel JT brand.
My mechanic called me to come have a look at the fit....there is quite a bit of play on the shaft,
Is that normal?

Enough for my mechanic...to have me look at it.  Yes, the retainer plate was quite worn, thankfully he had another to use.
I am replacing a 14T Jt sprocket from CaCycleworks & going back to a 15T.
My mechanic is a strong advocate of using OEM Ducati parts.
We put on a oem sprocket on there just to see the fit...it was tighter..a better fit. 
But, still more play than I would expect.

There will be some axial movement on the output shaft.  My guess is as long as the movement is just the sprocket on the shaft in the axial (horizontal) direction you are good, but over the internet, just a guess.  Is there another Monster you could compare yours to?

In the old day Ducati did it better with a large nut and lockwasher holding the front sprocket

It's a cheapjack way but it works well so long as the retaining washer is replaced now and then

OEM sprockets are also loose, fit doesn't matter with that set-up

As long as the retainer didn't wear enough to allow the front sprocket to "walk" like this one...



And your output tranny splines are not damaged like this one...



You should be fine with a new sprocket and new retainer. As others have stated, it is designed to have some wiggle room.
