I've got a week trial for free topographical maps through alltrails and Natgeo. you pretty much select the area you want, the level of zoom, and you can print (print to PDF) the map. It includes UTC measurements, magentic deviation, scale and etc. If theres anyone who hikes often and wanted to get a map of a specific area. PM me. This is a sample of the map i printed for a trek up to Mt.Washington in a few weeks.

thats a great site. Ive found a lot of free maps, but a lot of them took a lot of work to get the lat/long and magnetic deviation on. though 99% of the time your on the trail and you dont really need all that info!

I've been on a kick lately of finding as many dirt roads and barely roads at all around me and that site has been a great resource for finding the good ones. If it lists it as a "jeep trail" I know I'm onto a good find

Its a good Idea to bring GPS with you but I wouldn't go someplace unknown in a wilderness area without a Paper map as well. I would like to find time to go hiking this spring...

It's helpful to know which ridge or valley your in and how to get to a road or river when the thing breaks or runs out of juice. That way you don't miss dinner. I hate to miss dinner.

I didn't even think about the facts that I had no cell coverage, was at least a mile or two away from a real road and 30+ miles away from home and didn't really know exactly where I was when I went down in January on the KTM. Good thing it was ok to ride. Got home in time for dinner.

Well maybe not.
We were out riding in the woods on the CR's and decided to take a cat road down a hill. The farther down we went the steeper it got and the less used the cat road seemed to be. Finally the can road ended suddenly and there were just trees. Then Lance says that he can't make it back up the steep hill with his Bald cheng shin and his pipey little motor so we decided that the road was down below us and we would just take the bikes down to the bottom of the hill. Of course its the usual coastal second or third growth redwood forest and if you can see for 100 feet that's pretty good.
When we got down there there was a creek instead of a road, so we thought that we might never get our bikes out of the woods. Lucky for us the road was down stream about a quarter mile so. I found it by walking the creek bed for a while. After a couple of hours of dragging our bikes over fallen trees and under fallen trees we made it to the road. We were only 9 or 10 miles out of town so if we had to leave them there it would have just been a long walk in Moto Boots. I glad we were able to ride instead.

exploring sure is fun though I think I might start printing these maps out though as I've been wandering into some oddball places lately. Places where there are weird, misshapen people with 20 vehicles scattered about their property all with at least one flat tire.
