Hi there,
Hope someone can help with my monster problem.

The bikes a 2004 620ie and its developed this fault where when the starter button is
pressed it refuses to start but will still crank the motor over when the starter button is
released, it will continue until the kill swich is used or the ignition is switched off.

Sometimes it will fire up straight away then on the next attempt it wont start but still cranks
the motor, it does it at random hot or cold.

Any ideas would be appreciated

Best regards
Manxmonster

Not a lot of info to base anything on here.  Do you always here the fuel pump when you turn the key on?  You should hear a whine from the fuel tank for a couple of seconds when the key is turned on.  Is this related to time left sitting?  How are the spark plugs?  When is the last time the bike was serviced?  Cranking speed normal when the bike doesn't start?

This is really weird.  On your 620, cranking is controlled by the computer.  The switch is a computer input.  Usually a starter that doesn't stop is a sticking solenoid, but the kill switch doesn't stop that.  Maybe a sticking switch?

I'll make sure I listen for the fuel pump priming the the next time I try to start it, plugs are good, the last time it wouldn't start I pulled the front one out to see if it was sparking and the thing fired up on the rear cylinder!
plug back in it was fine. Problem not related to the time its left sitting, cranking speed normal when it wont start.
Bike runs great, no issues if it fires up.
I have noticed that even before this starting problem you don't need to hold the starter button on until it fires up,  even a momentary prod on it spins the motor as if its latched until the bike starts, I presumed this was normal.

Yup normal cranking behavior for your Monster, cranks until it starts, no need to hold the starter button.

It is normal to crank until it starts, but the cranking should stop after so many (don't know the number, but I will guess less than 10) seconds, not crank until the kill switch is hit.
