My monster is carbed, and apparently an off year, because the nichols flywheel is much more expensive than other years. Why is this? I see there is a metal piece on the lip. Is that it?

Does anyone know if the cheap flywheels on eBay or the MPL flywheel type 2 will work? Here's a link. http://www.ducationly.com.au/mpl_flywheels.html

Is it easy to machine my flywheel down? There's a wealth of information on the other bikes but I can't seem to find anything on the 99-2001 carbed monsters.

I mean, look at these two flywheels from ebay ads. Both of them look nothing like the flywheel ca-cycleworks is selling. Not saying he's wrong, I just don't understand what works and what doesn't, and why. (Gold is the nichols from ca cyle)

I understand one has the sprocket on it and the other doesn't, but seriously, there is no metal clip like on the nichols one on the two stock flywheels.

Then the MPL one looks even MORE different. The MPL one says it's compatible with all monsters post 98, but then it says IE only. Isn't ie a signifier for injected? Mine is carbed! ARGH!

eBay add 1 is a 3 phase flywheel (the shiny part) with the stator ring bolted to it. That's what the Nichols and other one will look like right before install. the 2 nd eBay and yoyodyne are 2 phase flywheels. I have a Nichols. It weighed exactly 1 pound at the post office compared 4 pound for the stock one. The little shiny bit on the edge is the crank trigger that tells the coils/plugs when to fire.

Words of warning: The nut for the flywheel has to come off with a rattle gun and be put on with a big ass torque wrench set to 150 ft/lbs. If you get the Nichols, get the nuts they sell. They're worth it. I broke a shovel handle in between the wheel and swingarm trying to tighten them down. use a 2x4 or something stiff. The reward was worth the struggle for me in the end by gaining acceleration.

The MPL one doesn't have the trigger bit on the edge though, will it work just as well as the nichols? Can I just put the timing trigger on the MPL one? And if that 2 phase yoyodyne won't work, will this one?

I would have the stock flywheel lightened if you have a shop that can do it for you.

Everyone keeps saying that, but I have no idea what that entails. I know I should have some of the meat taken off obviously, but from where? And this also means I have to have my bike out of commission for about a week, as stock flywheels are stupid expensive on eBay.

Myself I'd think you'd be almost as much $ into it paying for shop time and rebalancing as you would for aftermarket. I have no FHE with a lightened stock flywheel but it seems iffy to me. I have a Nichols and can attest to their quality. It didn't ship when they said it would so they overnighted it to me and they ate the cost. They're good people to work with. Just my 2 cents.

ebay ad 1 is the complete flywheel, alt magnet drum and starter gear for a 3 phase alt bike.  the middle bit (largest diameter) is the flywheel.

ebay ad 2 is just the alternator magnet drum that bolts to a 3 phase flywheel.

yoyodyne is a single phase alt carb flywheel, it bolts to the central carrier the single phase bikes have.  see the big hole in the middle.

mpl is for ie bikes, no trigger lump.  good luck if you can fit one, you need to be very accurate.

nichols or another that style is what you need.

machining std 3 phase ie flywheels down is easy and works well.  machining a carb one down is a hassle as you have to save the outer diameter for the trigger lump.  so you don't get the benefit you do on an ie bike.  machining them down is no issue, i've down a lot of ie ones, no need for balancing if set up accurately.  but none for carb.
