Thanks, I'll look around and see what's involved to remove that canister. If its not needed and could cause the sound, I'll just get rid of it. Thanks!
Ask your Ducati mechanic the best way to do it and pick up a couple of bolts from him to plug the holes. If you want a tidy look, you can fit the Euro radiator shroud so that it matches the right side. You'll finally see your horizontal cylinder too!  ;) http://motowheels.com/i-6921561-ducati-air-deflector-left-side-m696-m1100.html

Cleaned the chain and problem solved. The chain looked clean and well lubricated. So I took it for a good ride to warm the chain then gave it a really good clean and lubrication. Have not heard the noise since.

After my noise was diagnosed by the dealer as the check valve in the emissions canister (and the canister was replaced), the noise returned.  I had the canister removed, and the noise remained.  It turned out that it was the chain!?! Despite being clean and (apparently) well lubricated, a good lube job later and the noise is gone.  What the heck?  How often do these things need to be lubricated?  I used Maxima Chain Wax this time instead of the DuPont stuff I have used before, but I'm still quite surprised.  I'll keep my eye on the mileage before the sound returns, as I'm sure it will.
