I am looking at 2009 monster 696. It has 1400 miles on it.
I am looking for my first bike and don't know much about it. What kind of service record should I expect for this?

Even though it has mileage that low belts were due at two years old, brake and clutch fluid should have been changed annually plus oil and filter once a year.  Also make sure the fuel is not stale.

Go here to get the Owner's Manual: http://www.ducatiusa.com/services/maintenance/index.do

Maintenance info starts on pp. 99.  Keep in mind that service intervals are years and/or miles. In addition to belts, you'd like to see a few oil/filter changes, valve-check, fluids, and maybe plugs and air filter.

If those items haven't been done, plan on doing it or having it done if you pick up the bike. It may only have 1400 miles, but it's close to 4 years old. Not considering wear/mileage, tire shelf-life is about 5 years. If original, they'll be due for replacement in a year or so...

Good luck!

As a general rule of thumb I tend to double or triple the service interval on fork and brake fluids.

I figure there are those who ignore them completely for many many years and maybe most importantly in two decades of riding my extended intervals on those items have never caused problems.

Turn the ignition on, wait for it to scroll through, start the bike and see if there is a wrench "icon" on the LED display's upper right hand corner. If there is, the bike was not serviced at 600 mi, or it was serviced, but the maintenance light/icon was not reset. I'd ask the owner about that.

If it is convenient, see if you can find a local reputable Ducati mechanic and pay the mechanic to inspect the bike for you. I don't know the going rate in your area, but I would pay up to $100 for the mechanic's time to inspect the bike. If the owner is ok with that, you could make an appointment with the mechanic and meet the owner at the shop.

According to the chart in the M696 Service Manual it's the same interval as the clutch/brake fluid replacement - i.e. 22.5k miles or 36 months.
