So yesterday I went out on the bike. I rode for a bout an hour and the last 20min were pretty spirited. Temps about 200. when I got home it started running funny and I discovered that the rear coil was no longer working. They had just been replaced with a set of exacts from monsterparts a few weeks back. So I threw the old one back on and it runs as normal. The only other thing that seemed goofy was the RR got somewhat hot after running for 5min this morning in my driveway. So WTF happened and now what. New coils again? Is the RR shot? stator issue? I can fix nuts and bolts all day, but electrical somewhat stumps me. Thanks in advance!

If you have a carbureted bike chances are you have an ignition pick up that goes open circuit in high temperate.  Fuel injected, check all your connections (carbie too).  In doubt about coils?  Put the Exact back.  Does the bike now run on both cylinders?  Swap the horizontal and vertical.  Go for a ride.  Dead cylinder changes?  Bad coil is the culprit.  Bike runs on one cylinder?  Same.  Swap.  Other cylinder misfires?  Bad coil.  Regulators get pretty toasty.  May be normal.  Check voltage at the battery.  At about 3K RPM you should have 13.5-14.5 volts across the battery.  Higher might cause a problem with the coils working properly, truth is I don't know.  The problem needs to be corrected anyway.  Low voltage?  On an FI bike that can cause all kinds of weird problems.  Also tell us year and model.

Thanks got some more checking I spose. To be clear its an injected bike. Runs fine with the stock coil on the vert cyclinder. put the new exact on and it runs for a sec then dies on that cylinder. I will try to swap them, but the horizontal coil is a PITA to get to.

I think you found your answer.  Another check is get the coil warm enough to fail, check primary and secondary resistance and compare to the other Exact coil, or maybe Chris Kelly can help.  If the coil is defective (happens with everything, that's is why warranties exist) Chris would want to know.

thats kinda what I was thinking. I sent an email, but i'm gonna call as I havent heard anything back yet. I guess I'm just a little surprised. took off the old good ones and the new one isn't working :(. I guess its really all part of the fun and I didn't get stranded at least. I still want to check the stator I suppose. There isn't a way to check the RR myself right?

If you are getting 13.5-14.5 volts at the battery at 3K RPM the regulator is working.  If not post back.

yeah I get about 13 with the ignition off. with it on not running just under that. when its running I get 13-14 which seems fine. with the stock coil it never misses a beat. think I just got a bum coil/cap.

Oooooo! Actually, I'm hoping to learn more from your situation. Can we send you some parts? We have changed some stuff and it would be great to get your opinions on it.

Also, it's really tough to chase down the occasional coil failure. A rare occurrence is a bike just hate our coils, and there's no discernable pattern. So we asked the factory to change physical characteristics to help improve the couple of negative reports we have gotten. And the original plug caps aren't super amazing, so we're phasing in NGK resistor caps.

Please email us at orders@ca-cycleworks.com with your address and phone number and I'll work on your care package.

Thanks,
Chris

Thanks chris. both you and the guys at monster parts have been great. I sent you an email.

UPDATE!

Both the guys at monster parts and Ca cycle works officially kick ass. I got a response right away from both folks and got my new stuff promptly. I just got the new toys from the UPS guy and am looking forward to getting the new stuff installed and tested. Unfortunately my monster is a fair weather bike and its crappy here. Ill do cold but no rain or snow. I can't say thank you enough and how impressed I am with both of your service! Thanks again!! [clap]

So on thanksgiving day I got out for a romp and the new v2 coils are awesome. Fire right up when I tap the starter. They worked so awesome I ran past a police officer and got stopped for only having one mirror. Then I took it home for the next nice day. Far and few between these days.
