1100S to 1100 EVO ??
«
on:
December 12, 2012, 07:55:28 PM »
A 1100S has Ohlin shocks, the 1100 EVO does not but it has a little more power and a wet clutch, it may have ABS also. Just wondering, is going from a S to an EVO an upgrade or down grade?

the evo will have abs and traction control - it's still got adjustable suspension front and rear, marzocchi front and sachs rear if i'm not mistaken - really nice stuff
the only thing i dislike about the evo is the stupid shotgun exhaust. i'm not sure i'm a real fan of the stock under seat on the s either, but it's def. less of an eye sore to me.
you already know about the wet vs. dry clutch, but other than that and the minor engine upgrades on the evo and the colors, everything's pretty much the same..
probably comes down to the deal you can find. there seem to be quite a few evos around right now, but I haven't seen an s for sale in a bit...
i looked for an s for about 6 weeks before I found a deal too good to pass up on my evo

Honestly, I think the Ohlins on the S is worth it alone. The power difference will be miniscule IMO.
I wouldn't turn down a good deal on either one though.
FTR-I own an 1100 EVO and I have ridden the previous version 1100 S.

hmm... well I wouldnt swap my 1100s for an 1100 EVO.
But mostly for personal preference reasons... I like the Ohlins front end (although I think Ohlins are probably a little overrated), the Ohlins rear shock is certainly nothing real special (although still vastly better than the Sachs item on EVO). I like the dry clutch. I dont like the EVO's ram's horns exhaust routing.
EVO has ABS and the traction control thing. Neither of which I've ever missed, but having 'em can't be a bad thing.
5hp
at the crank
? You're seat of the pants dyno is more perceptive than mine if you can pick that.
So then, the answer to your question IMO is this: Whichever one does it for
you
the most, they're both great.
You can't lose

+1 for the dry clutch. even if you don't open it up, it'd be nice to have the option.
the exhaust on the evo, for me, isn't about the routing so much as it is that that giant can on the end. there are several options I like better, and slip on's for the evo are actually less expensive...although there is no full system to my knowledge. I know He-Man bolted up his s2r exhaust to an evo motor, so with some work there are probably quite a few options there...
I wouldn't mind seeing someone figure out an s2r style high shotgun on a new monster. could be kinda sexy
having never ridden the s, am I really missing something that good with the ohlins suspension? I was always under the impression people just recognized the name at this point

Like Ung said the front Ohlins are the balls, but the rear is nothing special.
I also like the 1100s, because it's the last DS engine.

i guess i'll just have to use that as an excuse to try to throw my leg over an 1100s...or maybe an s4rs
I have a feeling that'd be a bad idea for my wallet though...

Save your money for a totally different bike if your thinking of trading up. Like the others have wrote, there is not enough difference between the two.
I prefer the "S" model for its rarity and I like the Ohlins stuff. I've just about sealed the deal on an "S" model for myself, the price was way less than a EVO, so I jumped on it.

whoa...didn't realize you've already got the s...
i cant imagine it'd make nearly enough difference to move to an evo either...maybe consider a streetfighter instead?

Both are great, you can't go wrong with either in my view, but they are hardly different at all. If you can feel a suspension difference, on the street you are going to get a ticket... lol. I got my EVO because the wifey wanted me to get ABS on my next bike, I found my EVO and fell in love.
That said I want what shift1100 quotes below in the WORST way. I wonder if you can use the Termis for the EVO and just get a custom mid-pipe fabbed to raise up the cans a bit? Hmmm....

right? i finally settled for the cw shorty, but it took me a long time thinkin about it before i finally did. my thing was i didn't necessarily want to lose the rear passenger pegs permanently, and I couldn't really figure any way around that..I'm happy with my choice though - I got it to just kinda disappear with a black pipe and some exhaust wrap. it looks and sounds pretty mean.
I did consider the sc project high mounts, but they're very spendy for not what I really wanted anyway.
