Alternative choices for rectifier/regulator?

Hi guys

I have a 99 M750 which recently had the battery go out.  I took it to the Certified Ducati mechanic who told me to try a new battery.  About 1 month later, the new battery went out.  After looking through this board and reading lots of good info, I tested the electrical system and found that the regulator rectifier was bad.  It was sending 16-18 volts to the battery while revving. I took it off and found that two of the diodes were bad.  Now I need a new regulator rectifier.  The dealership here wants 100 euros for a new one (I am in Cyprus) and says it will take 4 days from Italy.

I would like to hear about alternatives to the Ducati stock rectifier regulator.  I plan to add some led turn signals and brake light in the future.  If there is a cheaper alternative anyone knows about, this would be great.  I saw some threads about switching to a123 cells or using a lithium ion battery -- maybe it would be a good idea to make the change now that I have to get a n battery also?  For different types of batteries do you need a different regulator/rectifier?

Thanks for your help guys

Firstly welcome Joe. My family originally come from Cyprus. [wine]

If you check out the forum sponsors you will see regulators from the US. I'm thinking that â,¬100 is not too bad a price if you add shipping into the equation. Some people have converted second hand regulators off Japanese bikes to fit, but they have to have matching specifications.

The only real difference between the OEM ones and the slightly higher priced ones are just a beefier design. There are some that are more technologically advance, and they can cost up to twice the OEM unit price.

Ive swapped an older bike out with one from a 1198 (certain years had a recall on defective batches for the earlier 1098) with out issue. you can generally pick up a used on for $30-50 that has been use lightly and will for the most part work for a while before it fries.

Try RM stator in Quebec Canada, RR's start at $69 usd and are beefier then oem. Don't know what shipping would be to Cyprus.

Thanks for the input guys
I'll probably just order one from the dealer.  Used ones are pretty scarce around here.

Shindengen FH020AA or FH012AA

for example: http://motoelectrixcom.myshopify.com/products/shindengen-fh012aa-regulator-w-connectors

They're not a direct plug-in replacement for stock (you'll need to crimp connectors), but they run cooler and are more reliable.

If you have a single phase stator, and you need a new regulator, I'd be tempted to replace the stator with the later 3 phase stator and use a mosfet regulator. Otherwise, according to the manufacturers statement you can use that kit on a 2 wire (single phase) stator as well as the 3 phase. There are other threads on the forum regarding the mosfet reg/rec's and they are very reliable, compared to the diode bridge reg/rec's. run much cooler, also, consider relocatin the reg/rec to an area where the airflow is better and ambient temp is cooler (under seat for example)

If i replace the stator with a newer 3 phase one , can i then use the same engine cover and generator  i now have on my  single phased engine? I have a working OEM RR installed now , but i dont trust it. I had an new Electrex RR51 (?) installed after my first OEM RR crashed ,and the RR51  was no good ( charging 15,1 V on high idle , causing acid fluid damage ) . I would be very happy if i could eliminate a potential RR breakdown , so i will be happy for suggestions on RR alternatives for single phased Ducs !
