So, like the inquisitive person i am, i decided to d!ck around with programming mode on my 696. This ultimately resulted in me disabling the IMMO  bang head and forced me to type in the 5 digit key code every time i needed to start the bike... bang head

For any other yokel out there with the same ideas, here is the procedure to program and sync the keys from A-Z....

(USE AT YOUR OWN RISK...)

1) YOU NEED BOTH KEYS TO COMPLETE THE BELOW PROCEDURE

2) Insert Key 1 and hold the UP/DOWN selector to UP and turn the key. Continue to hold UP until you receive the below output on the display
     "00000 PROG"

3) Hold the DOWN selector until the first 0 begins to blink. Type in the code from your key card and if successful you will see on the display
     "PROG ON"

4) At this point, Programming Mode is OPEN and will require you to enter the code every time to start the bike until you CLOSE programming mode.

5) Once you see "PROG ON", turn the key off and remove Key 1.

6) Place Key 2 into the slot and let it sit there for 30 seconds without doing anything.

7) After 30 seconds, hold down the DOWN selector this time and turn Key 2 on and let the countdown go from 25 --> 1 without interrupting the countdown.

Cool Once the countdown is complete, turn Key 2 off and turn it back on. The countdown will begin again.

9) INTERRUPT the countdown by turning Key 2 off before the countdown finishes.

10) Immedietely, remove Key 2 and insert Key 1 and turn on. The countdown will begin again. INTERRUPT the countdown by turning key 1 off

11) Turn Key 1 On Again.

12) Finished. Upon turing Key 1 on again, PROG OK will appear on the display and the sync is complete and programming mode is now CLOSED   drink

Mine was a little different. I did it like this:

1) Insert Key 1 and hold the UP/DOWN selector to UP and turn it on. Continue to hold UP until the display reads "00000  PROG"

2) Hold the DOWN selector until the first 0 begins to blink.

3) Type in the "electronic code" from the code card. Press DOWN to change the number, UP to move to the next number. If the code is wrong, go back to step 2. If the code is correct the display will begin blinking the code and PRO.

4) Turn the key off. Turn the key back to on. Display will read "KEY 1" and count down from 30 to 1 in about 6 seconds.

5) Turn the key to off BEFORE the countdown is done.  If the count down finish, it will say PROG OFF. If that happens, go back to step 4.

6) Remove Key 1 and insert Key 2.

5) Turn Key 2 to on. Display will now read "KEY 2" and count down from 30 to 1 in about 6 seconds.

6) Turn the key to off BEFORE the countdown is done. If the count down finish, it will say PROG OFF. If that happens go back to step 4.

7) When the bike is turned back on for the first time, using either key, it will read "PROG OK" and then go to the normal display.

Thank you for posting this thread. I'd been having to put the code in for the last few months since I also tinkered with my programming mode. Here is the issue with what just happenned though...

MY MILEAGE RESET! Not the trip, but the actual bike mileage! I had 3100 on the ticker, and now I've got all of 2...Figure that one out!

Lol...I can't say I'd ever sell it, but if I do, I'll definitely tell them to add 3100 to the odometer for the actual mileage!

I just had a new key cut that now needs to be programmed.
Will this procedure work, or am I doomed to the Duc shop?
If I can do it myself does it matter which key I use first?
(the old working one or the new one) Also how long should
it take to go in programming mode once I turn the key on?
I held the switch up for about 2.5 minutes before I gave up.
Switching keys did not help, and it does toggle as it should.
Any ideas?

A) Insert Key 1 and hold the UP/DOWN selector to UP and turn the key. Continue to hold UP (No Longer than 10 Seconds) until you receive the below output on the display
     "00000 PROG"

B) Hold the DOWN selector until the first 0 begins to blink. Type in the code from your key card and if successful you will see on the display
     "PROG ON"

C) Once you see "PROG ON", turn the key off and remove Key 1.

Then.....

Taken Directly from The Ducati Service Manual:

Programming the immobilizer
This instrument panel function enables programming of the Immobilizer System.
 Notes
Only 2 keys may be programmed.

Insert KEY 1 (one of the two black keys) and turn the ignition switch from Off to On;
within 3 seconds turn the ignition switch from On to Off;
within 15 seconds insert KEY 2 (the other black key) and turn the ignition switch from Off to On;
within 3 seconds turn the ignition switch from On to Off;
within 15 seconds, insert KEY X again (either Key 1 or Key 2) and turn the ignition switch from Off to ON.
If the procedure was successful, the instrument panel will display the message “PROG. OK” steadily for 3 seconds before returning to the normal display mode.
Programming aborted:
if you allow the 3 second countdown after Key-On or the 15 second countdown after Key-Off to elapse, or you make a mistake in the programming procedure, the instrument panel will abort the programming operation and display the message “PROG OFF” for 3 seconds before returning to normal display mode.
 Important
During the programming procedure, the instrument panel, in addition to saving the key codes in its memory, retrieves two “electronic” codes from the insertion of KEY 1 (the first black key to be inserted) and KEY 2 (the second black key to be inserted).

If the immobilizer is reprogrammed, the key codes will be erased and replaced with the new codes of the new keys; the two “electronic” codes, however, remain permanently in memory and cannot be deleted or overwritten.
The code on the Code Card corresponds to one of the two electronic codes and is used for Immobilizer Recovery and Immobilizer Reprogramming.

Is this for real? Cool Always wondered what you do when the bike hits 99999 and the odometer quits. Why they didn't add one more digit is beyond me...

Because you can practically count on one hand how many ducatis have actually seen over 100,000 miles... Lol
