ECU Low Voltage
«
on:
June 25, 2013, 08:32:46 PM »
So i dropped by bike off to ECS last week. As some of you know, i pretty much stopped riding and have put less than 1,000 miles since i got the bike in november since it wont hold an idle. I brought it back to the shop nearly 8 months later (too busy with school).
I installed the pod filters (Corse Dynamics kit) and apparently it is VERY lean. Not sure what the numbers mean, but if its suppose to be a 5, its at a .5 instead ( no idea what those numbers reference).
At the same time the bike is experiencing low voltage at the ECU. A problem that goes away once the motor warms up apparently. I also have an ignition switch issue (not the right hand switch, but the key area switch). Im not sure what that really means.
All i know is i can blip the throttle hard at idle and the bike cuts out.
So options? Replace the wireharness and ignition switch and see where I stand? I'm okay with getting rid of the bike too. Ill pull the motor and sell it with the ECU at a loss and toss the rest of the bike at the scrap yard and ebay. or perhaps leave the bike to rot in the corner of my garage until i have funds to one day stick it in a salvage 749 or something.

Rather than replacing the wiring harness, have you considered going open source?
If not, feel free to make me an offer I can't refuse on a package deal...

Which bike is this? Did you ever finish the 1100 swap? Or are we talking about the same bike?

Wish we could help but you're like the first person to do that kind of transplant. I'm assuming the ducatidiag didn't help/work? Maybe working 1on1 with JP? Do you think ECS is competent enough to diagnose it?

ECS is more than compentent. THey are a great shop.
We arent working in unknown territory. THe motor is in. the bike runs. but theres an idle issue. it can happen to any bike for the exact same reasons with the stock motor.
in the end the ECU just simply needs to send more fuel in. I'm not exactly sure why the ecu is getting low voltage, there must be a disconnect somewhere. When i get the bike back im going to tear down the whole wireharness for inspection for loose areas and see where i can work from after that.

backprobe you're power wire to see what your ohms and voltage are. I think a healthy wire should be .06 or less ohms but 0 is ideal.

You can't measure 0.06 ohms with a normal multimeter. touch the probe tips of your meter together. It'll be something less than an ohm. Measure the connection you want to measure, and it shouldn't be more than half an ohm in general more than the probe tips touching value.
Is it a Magneti Marelli ECU, or a Seimens?

Yeah. Didn't think about using a normal meter.

Sorry. The power wire for the Ecu. Typically it's 12volts on most modern vehicles but don't know if ducatis are different.

its deifntely 12 volts. its running off the batt.
Aside from that, i got the bike back and took her through a grueling ride home. She did great on the highway, plenty of power. Good response on and off the throttle in the little twistys i have around here. and then into the city with probably one of hte worst traffics ive ever been in.
she was ok!
HOWEVER, there is a lot behind this story. The unlock for the MM ECU is from the factory. it DOES NOT disable the immobolizer. Unforuntely the factory only allows edits for certain things such as the fuel. With the new motor, ECS was able to modify the fueling and spark, but couldnt touch how the idle controller works ( not sure how that one works exactly, i thought it was purely mechanical).
So the new 1100 motor, having more overlap on the intake and exhaust cycle, along with the bigger intake and exhaust valves and being 100cc larger, and having much more fuel added to it, ends up stalling when i blip the throttle agressively at idle.
What is happening is the accelerator pump dumping massive amounts of fuel into the cylinder. Not enough air is availble to burn, so the idle drops and if you blip it again, the bike just stalls. They couldnt edit the accelerator pump, so I cant blip the bike aggressively at idle. But she no longer stalls when coming to a stop and still pulls like a maniac.
As for the ECU low voltage, its an issue with the inginition lock. Need to figure that one out, probably smash it open and toy with it.
If everything checks out, im hitting the track July 7th!!!
