(97 M900)  I have had my headlight and speedo time turn on at times - I tapped the bike and the headlight would flicker on and off.  I traced the potential part to the control unit? that is in front of the fuses.  I moved the wires that connect to a five-prong connector and the headlight would flicker.  When I removed the control unit?, there was no flickering of the headlight.

The markings on the control unit? = MP, Type 23, B047, 12V.40A, ITALY.

1) What is the proper name for this part?
2) Are there places to get this part replaced other than the dealer?

It sounds to me like you're describing a relay, probably the ignition relay. A wiring diagram and the colors of the wires going to the component would confirm which relay it is, and the sticky for cheap alternatives to expensive Ducati parts would guide you to where to buy a cheap replacement other than the dealer.

The control unit you are talking about is the main relay.  Any good auto parts store should be able to match it for you, assuming it is the problem.  Could you describe the problem a little more.  Does the headlight blink on and off with the key on, off or both?  Any other electrical problems?  The relay is a cheap enough part you may just want to pick one up and give it a try.

It is the ignition relay...and the light does flicker on/off with and without the key in the ignition.

I was thinking that somebody like NAPA would have something like this.  Completely forgot about the sticky (even though it is at the top  :o) regarding other alternatives to the dealer, as I do have some of that information written down.

Thanks!
