08 S4R gear box problem

Would be fab if some could help.

Gear got stuck in say third, had to force the issue, now will not change down, clunks in to first and is falling out of second in to neutral???

Broken spring???

Probably an issue under the left side cover.

If you download the parts manual from ducati.com you'll see there are a couple of springs, a lever, and an adjustment pin that could cause this.

Sounds like an internal shifter linkage issue that can usually be assessed with the left cover removed, as dp mentioned.  The linkage mechanism is similar (identical?) across many years/models.  I went through something similar a couple years ago and photo-documented my fix here.  Ducati has an updated parts kit to strengthen the whole area.  Flywheel needs to come off if something needs adjustment/replacement.  The springs can break, the tabs on the "harpoon" can wear/bend and aggressive use of the shifter can push the whole assembly out of adjustment over time - the updated parts resolve the latter issue.
