Ok I just replaced the entire left peg holder bracket thing that hold the kickstand in, both rider and pillion foot pegs, and also supports the left muffler. This means I had to take out and put back on the shifter.

Now after replacing everything, my shifter never returns to the middle position after I downshift. Meaning I can't simple tap down to find 1st gear. I have to shift down, feather it up a little bit, then shift down, and repeat.

Advice? Upshifting I think works just fine.

I remember finding a very tiny spring type thing on the floor as I was working on the bike. I can't find it anymore... Could this be the thing that makes the shifter move back up after you shift down?

When you removed the shifter assembly, did you remove the clevis that attaches to the actual shift shaft?

It sounds like it might be rubbing on the cover.

Extra part that you can't find? There is a clue there I think.........

I would guess the spring was part# 12, which is only there to work as a detent on the passenger pegs and would not affect shifting at all.

are you re-assembling after powdercoat? I would check that some powdercoat isnt making something too tight and that everything is moving freely. the shifter return is determined inside the engine cover, but improper reassembly of your shifter assembly could make your levers hang up and stick out of place.

Just found out the problem is intermittent, so it leads me to think something is too tight. Thanks for the helpful feedback, guys!

Also, the spring part was not #12. I have that part put back on the bike. The extra spring I found was super tiny. The metal it was made out of was about as thin as .5 pencil lead thin. Maybe even thinner.

clevis? I think this sounds like the best solution right now, but idk what a clevis is... thanks for commenting! now I know which direction to start researching
