Hey guys, considering an engine swap on my 696.  My current engine is due for some big service, has some oil leaks, and all in all is lookin to cost some decent coin.  I've got a line on low mile 796 engine that's a good deal (less than the maintenance costs of the 696) and just wondering how plug and play the swap would be? Is there anything on the 696 layout that would not be compatible?

Thanks.

do you get the ECU with the engine?

No ECU, so I'll have to find one of those.

might need an ECU with NO ABS . . . if you dont have ABS on your bike, if you have an early 2010 with ABS you will need either an ECU with ABS or continuously turn ABS OFF from what I've seen in a "grey import" . . .

Couldn't you just get a rexxer reflash on your ecu, buy the 796 map.

Errr... Aren't there a few differences between the 796 and 696 exhausts?  ???

Yes.  OP could have his 696 ECU reflashed as 796.

All seems like a somewhat weirdly complex way to avoid (costly) maintenance.  What when the 796 motor needs work?

It wasn't so much to avoid the maintenance.  It just seemed like an interesting task, with little downside.  Gain myself a few horsepower, end up with an engine with much lower mileage, spend less money doing it?  I enjoy modding my bike...I've done a lot to it, I'm fine with spending money on it.  An engine swap just sounded like a fun project while also resolving my need to do that maintenance and gaining me horsepower.

Alas, the project is not going ahead, as ebay communications with the seller of the engine proved that he sounded like a complete asshat and I wasn't comfortable buying it from him.  So, ahead I go with the maintenance to my own engine.

a crank and a set of pistons and it will be a 796.
