getting bike into neutral after being started?

Hey all - I'm sure this has been discussed but I'm looking for a reason why I can't shift the bike into neutral while at a light or stopped.  Is there a switch or something I can disable?  I have a 2012 Monster 696.

It shouldn't be a problem.

If it is, usually the clutch doesn't disengage properly. People have had success bleeding the clutch hydraulic system and/or adjusting the lever correctly.

These 'slipper' APTC clutches are quite sensitive to correct adjustment because they need the full range of actuation to allow complete disengagement.

I've got a much older bike than you do, so YMMV, but I find it difficult to find neutral at a stop when the bike is cold.  It's possible, but it takes more effort than it does when the bike is warmed up.  I've adjusted my riding to find neutral while I'm slowing to a stop but still rolling.

If you shift down to first gear and engage it just before you stop then it's no problem.

But if the light turn red and you pull clutch and drop down 3 gears without engaging then it's difficult

Enough clutch drag to cause this when is not uncommon.  Hot should not be a problem.  As stopintime said, bleed the clutch.  Also check that the slave is not leaking.  The adjustment stopintime is talking about is the free play adjustment.  This might be off if levers have been replaced, particularly with aftermarket levers.  If your clutch lever is adjustable, adjust it for a longer reach if all else checks out.

 This issue is as old as motorcycle gearboxes. If you do not select neutral just before stopping, simply roll the bike to and fro a bit while hunting and you should be alright, after making sure all is adjusted properly as above.

+1 on that, I roll slightly backwards while shifting

make sure the slave is completely bled and also that adjusters on clutch handlebar lever are set for best lift that may help
