Getting ready to order a 14T front sprocket (Seriously, what where the engineers thinking? Does the 15T improve MPG all that much?) for my 2014 M696.  Do I need the Plate or Nut version?

The parts manual shows it as a plate type, but it's only a few screws to pop the cover and look to be certain.

Next dumb question....  how would I know?  My SV650 had a big nut that held the sprocket on, so I'm going to guess that was the nut type?  I googled-imaged a few variations on plate type motorcycle sprocket and got plenty of results that may or may not have been accurate.

Yes...if there's a big nut...it is the nut type.

The plate type has no nut or threads on the end of the shaft. Instead a small oblong plate screws to the sprocket and keeps the sprocket from walking on or off the shaft.
