Especially this time of year - see one doe? There's at least one buck right behind her, and probably a couple, none of whom are looking both ways before they cross the road.
Last weekend we were headed north, at night, with a loaded trailer out of Flagstaff - we saw two large mule deer, a cow elk, a raccoon, a couple of coyotes - and then about two miles from home (and out of the ponderosa highlands, in juniper scrub country I tell myself isn't as "elk-y" so I start to breathe easier) a magnificent bull elk standing on the fog line. Even though I was driving like a grandmother, 10-15mph below the limit and watching intently for critters, I spotted him too late to have done anything about it if he'd decided to step into the lane. Riding after dark up there brings back bad memories of suburban Maryland.
