749/999 rear shock on Monster 620ie?

I have read that an inexpensive suspension upgrade for a Monster 620ie is the shock off of a 749/999.  Is this possible?  I look at the current setup and that area is so crowded that it would be hard to install a shock with an external reservoir.  If anyone has ever successfully made this upgrade I would really appreciate details on how it was accomplished.

Monster 900-2002 (sold, alive and well in the UK), 749R / 1100 HYM combo for track days, wifes / my Monster Dark 800-2003 (not entirely "Dark" anymore and a personal favourite) , 50% of 900SSie -2000 track bike for rainy days-now with tuned ST2 motor and Microtec ECU. Also parked due to having been T-boned on track.

Well, it looks more complicated that I had hope to make this upgrade.  I think that I will just upgrade the stock shock with a better spring and leave it there.  Thank you MonsterHPD for you input!    [thumbsup]
