Hi guys.

My 696 has the check engine light turn on every cold start. The error code is always the same, FUEL. Once I ride her for 5 min or to the shops and turn it off for 5min light goes away. For the rest of the day the light will never turn on again. Ride is totally fine with no performance issues. Had it check a few weeks back at Ducati and they Pluged her into the computer, it was telling them that it's a fuel pump issue. They are also saying that if the bike performed as it is (normally) no need to do anything... Just keep on eye on it and if I notice any performance changes bring it in so they can change the fuel pump for me at a small cost of $1500. Or if I want the light to just go away they can replace it for me for $1500... I think you can see where I'm going here.

I'm very comfortable with working on my bike myself and I quite enjoy it. I also will replace the pump myself in time.

So here's my questions, Has anyone done this before or had this problem, if so how did you fix it? (If you just took it to the shop to get it fixed no need to respond)
Do I need to replace just the pump or the whole pump assembly?
I can find new pumps (pump only) for about $40. I can also find second hand OEM full pump assemblies for around $150US (not keen on this option)
3rd and last I have found an OEM New pump assembly but they are asking $700. What and can anyone suggest?

Look forward to reading your thoughts. Cheers.

If that is the issue then our sponsors have options. Maybe the fuel filter needs changing, how old is it?
I would also check the wires going to the pump. Internal tank lines may need attention as might external lines. Just some things to consider.

Thanks for the tips. Fuel pump is original so that would make it about 8 years old. My bike has only done 3800ks. So low ks for a bike that age. I only just got the bike from her first owner 500ks ago/ 1 month ago. It could be part to do with the last owner keeping it under cover for months at a time and very rarely riding it. I have its full service history and no pump changed. Just belts about a year or so ago. Like I said bike rides beautifully.

As for checking the external line and lume. I just replaced the battery this weekend so I had a good look around under the tank and around all the wiring. Everything was clean and in what I could see as good working order.

I think it's a dirty fuel line or filter.

The latter more than the former.

Just a guess but if these are cleaned up it may help
