Help My Side Stand (and more?) isn't working

Hello Everyone,

I am new to this forum, so hello!  I recently (about 2 weeks ago) bought my first Ducati. I bought a 2011 Ducati Monster 796 ABS off someone and have been loving it so far. Before getting this bike, I learned on a Ninja 250 and then a Katana 600 (slowly working my way up there). Anyways, I have always wanted this bike and after many years have finally gotten one.

Today I ran into a bit of a problem. When I went to put my side stand down, it wouldn't support the weight of the bike and wanted to fall forward. Thank god it didn't! Also, the components on that side of the bike feel loose. Anyways, I took some pictures and it seems like part of the metal, near the side stand has shifted, and one of what appears to be a bolt hole is visible. One of the bolts is also loose and can be pulled out - which is evident in the second picture. I feel like this might be a an easy fix? If anyone has any ideas can you please let me know. Money is tight and if possible I would like to fix this myself.

Thank you!

From what I can see and from your description at the least you will need to repair the stripped thread with a http://www.timesert.com or http://www.helicoil.in  assuming there is enough material around the hole.  My preference is TIMESERT.  THe other, you might get lucky and only need a bolt.  Meanwhile get that bike on a rear stand.

Easy?  Read the web sites and decide for yourself.

Congrats on the new Monster.  Apparently the sidestand mount bolts are prone to loosening - happened on my 695, but mine didn't fall out like yours appears to have done.  Also your footpeg mount bolt is hanging out.  Either put the bike on a stand or find a safe place to lean it so that you can remove the other sidestand bolt and the sidestand and mount (the aluminum piece).  Leave the stand attached to it's mount.  The Allen head screw takes an 8mm wrench - if you need to buy that, get a set of Allen head sockets - a set of six from 4-10mm will come in handy.  The missing bolt should be the same size as the one you've removed - at least it is on my bike.  Try it in the hole where the bolt is missing to see that the threads in that hole are ok. You may be able to find the missing bolt at a good hardware store, or certainly online - sorry I don't recall the size and thread pitch, but someone here may.  You can of course get it from Ducati, for more money.  Somewhere there's a list of torque specs for all the fasteners - just remember you're tightening the sidestand mount bolts into aluminum...

100% with howie on this. If either thread is stripped they will need a timesert as howie explained. A helicoil will not be strong enough as it is a major load bearing part. I have seen this before and your case sounds bad enough to have a reputable thread repair specialist do a pro job. Dont skimp out on it as it is your crankcases we are talking about.
I had a customer bike (1100 MTS) with this issue and a called a Timesert specialist. I could have done the job but I would have had to buy the kit, special tools and then charge for my labour, so I subbed out the job to a guy that is a Timesert dealer who does this work day in day out. He came on site and charged me 100 pacific pesos AUD and did the job in 15 minutes when it would have taken me a very careful hour or two. Worth every cent. Probably cheaper over there. He is known here as "The Thread Doctor" and race teams who snap an engine stud flush to the block on Friday call him so they can race Saturday. If you can find someone good it gives you confidence.

Meanwhile, watch the video, decide if this is the kind of job you want to tackle by yourself.

Thanks guys, your advice all makes sense. Hopefully it isn't stripped... but if it is, at least I have a game plan now. Good thinking removing the other bolt to see if it is stripped or not and to possibly take it to a hardware store to find another similar one. I will check it out tomorrow.

I guess with the missing side-stand the kick stand must have shifted and that is why it has that odd angle now. Anyways, hopefully I will be back in the saddle soon.

Same thing happened to my '13 796... one of the bolts vibrated loose and fell out.  Luckly, I found out when it was in the driveway... and I caught it before it fell.  Just went to Home Depot and got a new socket head bolt... and a little tube of Loctite.

Well, it proved to be simpler than I had thought. It turn out that the side stand bolt had gotten lose and that the side-stand mount itself had shifted. I really just had to go buy an Allen Head Socket (I bought the pack), as suggested, to remove a few more bolts so I could lift up the foot peg assembly? and slide the side-stand mount back into place. Then just had to added some Loctite, as also suggested, and tightened everything up. None of the threads were damaged so it was pretty straightforward.

Thanks again!

Good news. [thumbsup] My Hyper had the same issue and luckily the same simple fix. Noticed the bike leaning a little more than usual. Getting it early before damage occurs saves a call to "The Thread Doctor" ;D The way your bike was falling over sounded severe.
I check those bolts as part of the maintenance routine.
