Hey Guys - I recently purchased a 796 with 1500 miles on it. Having issues starting the bike when left overnight, even though it's hookd up to the tender. Takes several attempts before it actually starts, and once it does it immediately idles at 1,000 to 1,200 rpms. DP ECU and Termi's Are the only adjustments from stock. Bike also hates being below 4K rpms while moving, and that's with a 14 tooth front sprocket and +2 rear sprocket. Everything I've read says that's normal though. Thanks I'm advance for your help.

Might be obvious but I'll mention it anywaysâ€"is the cold start/choke lever engaged when it shouldn't be?

It's the lever on the left hand controls nearest the center of the bike.  I use it when my bike is cold and won't start, and ease it off as it warms up.

'11 M796 does not have a fast-idle lever.

It does have a Idle Air Valve, which the ECU uses to control idle speed.
I'd say that is not working properly.

Oh interesting, I did not know that. ðŸ'

Just tried to start it again. Took about a minute to start and once it does it sits right at 1200 rpms without moving. If I rev it a bit it will come back down and sit at 2000 rpms for a second or 2 before dropping back down to 1200.

Some 796's have a starting quirk. Mine does.

Obviously wait until the dash finishes booting before you hit the starter button. Do not touch the throttle. Make sure the battery is fully charged before you attempt the above with it cold.

Mine either starts no issue, or doesn't. When it's happy, it starts and idles at 2,000 briefly before settling to 1,200.

Mine is very unhappy if I continue to crank it and may or may not start, but this can't be good for the starter.

I've found that walking away for 5 minutes if it doesn't start first try works. Next attempt it starts and idles at 1,200. Try this and report back.

My theory, the Siemens ECU has a weird protocol for starting and takes 4 - 5 minutes to completely reset.

What he said ^, super easy test, totally free.
Let us know how it goes.

Thanks guys. I reset the TPS (I think) yesterday and it started first try. Went out a few minutes ago and it start right up again. Actually went right to 2000 rpms for a few seconds before settling down to 1200. No idea if it's a coincidence so I'll let it sit for a few days and report back. It's a Super Blackbird kinda weekend.

The TPS can be reset by cycling the key through the boot sequence without starting three times. Won't have any bearing on the quirk from my experience.

Hey Duc796, if its any help, My 2011 796 non ABS with 5k on it starts at the press of the button, fast idles at around 2k for bout  6 seconds then idles at around 1200. I have heard tell that the TPS resets itself every time the ignition is switched on so it is important to let the diaglog finnish scrolling and not to move the throttle until it has.  Also , i'm running Termi's with no baffles and DP ecu. It's like a damm motorcross bike below 3500. 30mph cruising is a 3rd gear job. 15mph in very slow traffic is 1st gear and toying with the clutch  [roll] Throttle , snatchy as F. I think the lumpiness below 3500 isn't helped with the baffles out but it doesn't half sound good when on song. Oh and I've been informed that they dont like quality, high octane fuel, cant cope with it so in needs to be run on cheap S***. Hope this helps with your mind set.

My stock 796 runs even lumpier on 87 M+R/2 below 4,000 FWIW. Runs best on E-0 93. YMMV...

However, the ECU seems to only need ~15 seconds to reset not 4-5 minutes (you should give that a try). So i turn it off for 15 seconds, back on, and then the second time I tap the starter it roars to life instantly. I only need to do this when the bike is cold, warm starts are always first try.

That being said, what's stopping me from buying a used ECU off of eBay and swapping it, to hopefully find one that isn't impacted by this? Will I run into problems with the immobiliser ?
Maybe quit while you're ahead. Mine takes at least 3+ minutes to reset. Can't recall whether the code is stored in the instruments or ECU. Maybe someone else here will remember that about Siemens.
