2012 Ducati 796 - Talk me out of it

Hi gang. It's hard to believe, but it's been 10 years since I sold my Monster. I've regretted selling it ever since I said goodbye. Not sure if any of you remember me or not?
Anyway, I occasionally search facebook marketplace for monsters and sometimes dream about getting another one. I came across this bike over the weekend, and am trying to figure out if it would be worth it.
Theft recovery, no keys or code card. Unknown miles. Don't know how long it's been sitting. The seller only has the auction paperwork and the bill of sale. Am I crazy for considering this? Please convince me to either buy it or walk away....

Thanks for your time!
Joshua

Crashed?
Anyway - even if it can't be saved, it has parts worth more. IF, IF, IF you're willing and able to part out.

Hi there! I totally remember your avatar. Thanks for the feedback.
The bike doesn't appear to be crashed, wrecked or dropped. Just probably hasn't run in a really really long time.
The obstacles would be:
Getting a replacement title (not too worried about that)
Getting replacement key(s) & ignition
Getting the immobilizer programmed with the ECU/dash/whatever
Then figuring out if the fuel system would need to be replaced or somehow cleaned out?
It's the last two items that I'm the most concerned about.

Thanks
The whole kit comes up for sale here and there. Maybe not often, but they do. Plenty of places who part out Monsters.
If you buy parts from different places and have some on this bike AND have legal paperwork, SOS Diagnostic will pair the parts. Not super cheap, but well done. IIRC new ignition switch, keys, tank cap with lock and seat lock is around $500.
Fuel system will fight you
This tank is bullet proof, so that's probably only cleaning. Filter, some/all hoses and maybe a pump is DIY - from California Cycleworks - who also sell affordable injectors.
If you have time and patience

The 2012 Monster still had the old formulation plastic fuel tank... If it's had old fuel in it for a long time, and particularly ethanol-blended fuel, there may be issues with tank swelling and internal delamination of the plastic.
When I bought my 2013, in 2016, it had sat for about a year with ethanol-blend fuel... the tank had swelled, but I was able to get it under control by running only non-eth fuel in it since.

Sorry. I thought it had the black plastic tank behind painted covers. My mistake.

Good info. What year did Ducati switch to the new formulation of plastic tank?
BTW I ended up passing on this deal, but I'm still on the hunt for another one.

No, you're not mistaken. It is as you describe. Some complications tho..... in the US their gas tanks were made from a different composition plastic than our Euro market ones (I cant remember now it's been so long and I'm way too lazy to back trawl the old Ducatiz threads). IIRC Euro tanks are made from PEX (cross linked polyethylene), the US ones from....something else. A something else far more susceptible to the mal-effects of ethanol. [EDIT:US M696/796/1100 tanks were (for some reason) made from PA (polyamide nylon) and appear more grey in colour. Euro market tanks made from PEX (cross linked polyethylene), they look more black than grey].
BTW - Me? I wouldn't buy it, too much real and potential hassle. Just go buy a nice M796 and come rejoin the fold

That was the same conclusion I came to. Not sure if I can afford a nice 796, might have to settle for a 696.

Kopf; I believe it was the black "inside" tanks that were made in one air tight (US) and one not so air tight (EU). No? Yes?
When I wrote "my mistake" I had an image of a HM796 in my head. So much for my head

I'm seeing what some people are asking for 2v air-cooled 796's... some with pretty high mileage... and I'm like... WTF?!?! ...are they gold-plated or something?
