Check out a book called "I Hate You, Don't Leave Me." It's pretty helpful in understanding this condition. A patient of mine brought in a copy after saying she'd seen the title calling to her from clear across a bookstore.

My wife has found it useful in dealing with one of her relative <cough - mother in law - cough>.
