Problems with wireless router

So I'm having problems with internet connectivity, and one of the things I'm trying to do is to disconnect from a hard wire connection to a wireless router.

I take the LAN cable straight from the modem provided by Comcast - bypassing the router.  Now I've got no connectivity.  Vista says it's connected - but I.E. ain't working.

I keep asking the computer to go straight to the internet (through settings through IE through anything), but it seems to keep wanting to find a network.

How do I solve this to get I.E. to work properly?

did you call comcast and have them set you up yet?
i ask because when i recently started with them, they delivered a router and start up kit.....
it didnt work until i called in and they set up my account over the phone. at that point they told me the start up kit was useless...

Make sure you are restarting the modem  by unplugging and reseating the power cables after you conect the ethernet cable.  See if your computer's getting a valid IP address - if it's blank or a 169, you know you aint getting squat from the modem.

I've done that twice.  Sorry  if I wasn't clear - this computer setup has worked previously (cable from wall to modem, LAN cable from modem to Linksys wireless router, then hardwire LAN cable to Dell Laptop.)

My ability to use Citrix to connect to my office network went bye-bye the other day.  I'm insanely frustrated.

The goal I have in front of me is to get rid of the router (since I got rid of the other computer in the other room) and simplify.  Unfortunately, I CANNOT seem to get the computer to connect to the internet once I've bypassed the router.   The Dell is running Vista, and I'm sure that's causing some of the problems.  In my proletarian way of thinking about this, I'm imagining the router connection branded a network connection into the computer's memory, and I can't seem to erase it and just connect straight through the modem.

with the router connected to the modem, what does it show your internet address to be?

(login to the config page for the router and look at the network settings)

Also- check your router's firmware and your motherboard's drivers (bios and networking).  I had a Linksys router "stop" working on me after an OS update and had the same symptoms- looked like I was connecting but nooooo.  Updating the router firmware corrected my issue.

Since Tuesday's Vista/Windows update was a big one (500+ patches globally) and included a number of security fixes, you may need to grab some new firmware.  Try just the Linksys stuff first though.  I no longer use their routers because I found them to be a bit slow for support and not all that helpful on the phone.

Well the first problem is a faulty modem.  Could not get the machine to give me a valid IP address at all tonight.  Comcast ran a diagnostic and from the source to the modem, they've got a clear line.  Modem to anything else - nada.

Wednesday the Cable Guy shows up.  If it doesn't work then, I'll be back here late Wednesday night.

You have no internet service right now and they tell you you have to wait til Wednesday? Sounds like you need to look to another company to me....

The other option was to drive to a Comcast center for a swap of modems.  Schedules don't permit that - that's all I'll say there! [evil]

I had heard about people's frustration with them. They are the only other option here,so needless to say, I went with the competition...

comcast is the only game in my area :P
