Other than the cool location factor, do you find the beers taste different there than here, say the Chimays for example? Did I mention I'm really jealous?
I've noticed a few differences, but not in the abbey beers (not that I drank a lot of abbey beers in the states). One big difference is Heineken, which now tastes like a much lighter beer than what I remember, and of course Stella, which tastes much better from the tap than from a can (don't they all?). Now, I think the "watery taste" of Heineken might be due to a subconscious comparison to every other beer I've been drinking here.
If there is any difference in the abbey beers, its in the way they are served. Here most beers have a specific glass they must be served in, and any café/bar/pub/restaurant worth anything will have the proper glasses for every beer they serve (as well as generic tulip-shaped beer glasses for foreign beers). These glasses are supposed to "release the aroma, preverve the froth, enhace the flavor, etc...". Do they do that? Maybe, I'm no connoisseur. But I do prefer drinking out of those glasses than out of a pint or pilsner glass.
Here are a few examples of
proper
beer glasses:
Chimay:
Duvel:
Hoegaarden Grand Cru:
Delirium Tremens:
And so on and so forth...
As for the Spa, it is really close to where I'm at.. not much more than 50 miles. But unfortunately F1 tickets are prohibitively expensive (as are motogp tickets here), and without a car those 50 miles start looking like a long trip... If there was a direct train it would be one thing, but the suggested route is train->walk->bus->bicycle.
So I'm doing the next best thing, recording the training sessions, and hopefully I'll get to watch the race tomorrow (the DVR will be busy with WSBK, which for some silly reason is on live at EXACTLY the same time as F1). Oh, these silly europeans!

Some scientists claim that hydrogen, because it is so plentiful, is the basic building block of the universe. I dispute that. I say there is more stupidity than hydrogen, and that is the basic building block of the universe.

Yeah, I don't know how much of a difference the glass shapes make, but I think they're pretty cool.
Too bad about the hassle and cost to see the races out there. That track is in such a beautiful setting, would love to see it some day.
