The fact that you use port, starboard, fore, and aft in everyday conversation won't help

I have a carbon half cover with Barnett steel plates on the stock basket. Yes its loud. The fact that they laughed and then rolled up their windows was less than cool. I am thinking of an aluminum basket and plates set up. Anybody running one?

Think of it as a "qualifier". Chicks that don't know how cool a dry clutch with an open basket is are a waste of time. The good news is that you didn't even have to talk to them to find that out. ;:|

The clutch noise is a pretty simple concept that's easy to understand: The friction plates have metal tabs that fit into metal slots in the clutch basket, and the tightness of the fit is generally imperfect. As the engine spins the tabs are driven back and forth in their slots, which makes a noise consistent with what you would expect a dozen metal tabs hammering into the sides of a dozen metal slots to sound like. Obviously, the clutch cover covers a lot of this up, and an open cover doesn't.
Quieter clutches have tighter tolerances, and louder clutches have looser tolerances (which lead to the tabs hammering harder into the sides of the slots). Clutches with perfect fits between tabs and slots (i.e. no free play, the tab fills the slot entirely) make almost no noise at all.
For example, this clutch is extremely quiet:
http://www.desmotimes.com/product4.htm
Most clutches start out with a mediumly tight tolerance between the tabs and the slot, and get progressively looser and louder as you put on miles. By 6k or so, the clutch is louder than your exhaust with an open cover. With the above-linked clutch, by 6k you are still quieter than a brand new stock clutch. They accomplish that by using smaller slots, then custom grinding the individual tabs to the exact size that fits.
If you want an open clutch for ventilation, cool spinny look, and better sound, I recommend getting the ProCutting clutch, since it is MUCH quieter, but IMO, just as cool. A stock clutch with an open cover IS, in fact, too loud for the average blonde.

That's a cool looking clutch. Its kinda expensive though. Maybe if I could get everyone to pitch in .50 cents each I could get one. Sorry couldn't resist.

I am still undecided if I like the sound of the dry clutch. I love the feel of it on my monster but I have been hesitant to open it up. I was at a dealer last Saturday getting service and they had a 999 with an open clutch. That thing was soo friggen loud it was annoying. But later on another guy picked up his 748 with an open clutch and it sounded nice. Not as loud but still noticeable.
What determins how loud your clutch is? Sorry for the noob question.
I really like the sound of the open clutch but I have a wet clutch and the sound of my Sil Megaphones on my lil' 620 is music to my ears without the clack-clack-clack!

IZ don't feel bad. I've got a carb'd 400. If it makes you feel like more of a man, you can say you don't have the smallest monster on the DMF.

the dry clutch was one of the things that sold me on the s2r 1000 over the s2r... and of course, there's the adjustable suspension, the extra cc's, etc., etc.
