Though the dealers are hurting, I still think you can get a much better deal used.  I have been seeing some amazingly low prices on clean, low miles bikes on craigslist.  Double check before you buy

thanks for all the info everybody. yep, i try to keep my options open also on the used front, i just do not have too much time to go far away to check out bikes. if something shows up close, i will certainly check it out.

the intro mods i have in mind at this point are bar risers, a clutch slave cylinder and frame sliders...
