So...Thinking about doing the damn thing and buying a ring sometime soon...And I know this might vary widely...But I'm looking for opinions on what a woman expects from a ring.  I'm thinking platinum, round cut.  Just don't know what size, and I know it all depends on budget...Just thought I would ask what all y'all decided on.  Any input appreciated!
just rereading your post... LMAO  'the damn thing' ... you certain you want to jump into the cold dark waters of marriage (not saying your girl isn't a warm mermaid waiting on the bottom... mine is (in case she's reading)... but the damn thing??? LMAO

Didn't feel like reading page 2 so if it's been said, sorry.

Presentation and intention is much more important that the size of the ring. Most of their friends won't be asking how big it is. They'll be asking how you proposed and she'll want a good story.

my woman dropped a hint one time.  go to somewhere that sells second hand rings (dont wanna say pawn shop, but you get the idea), and get a cheaper ring.  once you get the hard part out of the way, THEN take her shopping for a ring that she likes.  if you do that, she will have a ring that she can show off, and one to wear the rest of the time.

makes no sense when i type it, but like several people said before,   its not the ring, its the presentation that matters most.

Does the size of her ring matter to her family, friends, and coworkers?  Does your fiancee care?  Does she like bling and want to show off?  If so, find a good balance between the size (carat), cut, and color.  Diamonds with flaws can be hidden by the setting and/or prongs.  For sheer brilliance, the classic round will sparkle the most.  Good luck shopping and congratulations!

Let's not forget the ring says something about you, too.

What guy here hasn't checked a girls hand to see if she was single only to be blinded by the huge friggin' rock on her hand?

Just look at it as a way to tell strangers that you're better than them, without ever having to meet!

[laugh] I have to admit that I've thought about it that way a couple times too.

Don't forget to take into consideration what she does for a living.  It can have an impact on the type of setting you/she wants to get.

Some prong settings are high and get caught on everthing, especially clothing.  Which could result in her losing the stone.

No matter what you get her, INSURE IT!!!! with jewelry insurance.  Don't assume it is covered under your homeowner's/renter's insurance, some have a jewelry exclusion clause.

"Yelling out of cars, turning your speakers out the window to blast your music onto the street, setting off M-80 firecrackers, firing automatic weapons into the airâ€"these are all well and good. But none of them create a merry atmosphere of insouciance and bonhomie quite like a revving motorcycle.

I gave my wife my great-grandmother's ring when we got married. I had the ring brought up to like-new condition but made no attempt to replace the rather small diamond. I was only 19 at the time and couldn't afford anything.

It's been 27 years and I can afford lots more now. That's still her engagement ring, with the same little stone. For one thing, replacing the stone would make it something else, not her engagement ring. For another, she's not really a diamond girl. Pearls are more her thing.

A marriage is about a whole lot more than a ring or the stone in it, so much more that the whole ring thing seems faintly ridiculous to me now. That's not to say I didn't worry about it back in '81 but if I'd blown the tuition money on a rock back then I'm sure we'd regret it now.
