Will people think I'm old if I buy an ST4?
«

Had a ride of an ST4 today and I liked it. In fact I liked it a lot. My big question is this:
Will people think I'm old if I buy an ST4?
The monster has ATTITUDE
, the ST4 has REFINEMENT
.
The monster screams BLING ME
, the ST4 states I WILL GO FOR EVER [moto].
The monster is a RENEGADE
, the ST4 CONFORMS and is COMFORTABLE
.
The ST4 has more power, more comfort, is easier to ride in traffic, will be better on longer trips ...
Will I be allowed to stay on the DMF?

Just a point of contention - More power, I think not.......
ST4 easier to ride in traffic, I think you need to try a bit more than a ride - Only easier if you don't lane split...., not a nimble bike but great for touring!
Other than that - No problem,
Enjoy the change and you will always be welcome.
On that thought, I love the Sport 1000 classics - don't have any of the pluses you mention, eg, easy to ride in traffic or more power, or even more comfort, but they look sooo cool!

See? This is exactly what I mean. People think it's an old fart's bike.
In fact it goes like stink, has fully adjustable top class suspension, and would more than likely put my monster to shame.
By the way, thanks for still talking to me Bazz.

OK, I'm comparing power figures with my '02 900 2V and an ST4s has quite a few more bhp.
Also comparing the wet clutch on an '05 ST4s with my dry clutch. Pick up was heaps smoother and there was much less snatchiness at lower revs.
Guess I should be riding some newer model monsters to get an accurate comparison.

I don't think its and old farts bike, now if you bought a BMW, then that's another story.....
I say ride what you want and don't bother worrying about what others think - if it puts a smile on your dial, that's what matters.

A bunch of guys turned up at the Island one year for a training course on a couple of ST Ducati types with some RG Beemers thrown in and a Varadero and Vstrom to add variety. And they copped a lot of sideways looks and sneers from the sports bike brigade !!
It wasnt long before the big trailie/tourer guys were walking around with self satisfied smirks,
.
After riding around the outside of some of these heroes around Southern Loop, Siberia and even a higher corner speed through turn one they definatly showed that there is a lot more to these type of bikes than meets the eye. [moto]
.
Its what turns you on that matters, after all its still a Duc aint it??

Will people think you're old? Nah, they won't need to
think
about it
Ha, do what you like. I often think a Ducati (any Ducati) is a mid-life crisis bike. My theory goes that bike people as they mature buy a Ducati (for varying reasons). When non-bike people have their mid-life crisis they buy a Harley ... and when people get really old they buy a BM (or Goldwing) - I have reminded a few Harley riding workmates of this a few times, so they know what is ahead of them.
And I have the right to take the piss out of whoever I like because I readily admit that on any day and on any machine I am quite likely to have my riding ability shown up for what it really is

Thanks all for your input. I stayed up real late last night thinking about all this and, after a long hard look at the bike I've got, decided to keep it. I think I would be buying the ST for an attitude change and I don't think I'm ready for that yet.
I always assumed that an ST of some description would be my next bike and after hearing recently that they aren't being made anymore I thought that I better get in quick while there is still a few good ones around. I guess I'll just have to cross that "what's next" bridge when I come to it.
So, for those who are interested, there is an immaculate ST4s ABS for sale in Melbourne. It is an '05 model (the last) and has only 5800km on it.
The guy who owns it has updated to a 1098 and wants to buy a car. He's asking $15900 for it. You'll find it on Bikepoint.
Get this; we went to have a look and it turns out the guy lives in the same house my wife lived in when we first met. We spent about an hour there looking at the bike and taking it for a ride,
then he asks if I, a complete stranger would like to take his 1098 for a spin!!!
So thanks Roger. You're an absolute legend. (umm, sorry I didn't buy your bike)

is it an ST4 or ST4S? If it's the ST4S it has the same 996 mill as the S4R desmoquattro and has heaps of power, the only monster with more is the testastretta S4R and S4RS. as far as nimble? rusty, have you ridden one? they look bigger cos they are but they really handle well, very well. and they're definitely not just for old timers! i say go for it!

meister....what's the ABS like?
looks amazing!
I reckon they are brilliant....and I could see myself on one....I prefer big k's at the moment and I think the Monster can be a little limited in any area that you want to specialise in.
how about the fairing? good wind protection?
There was a bloke on T.O.B whose avatar was him at about 50% dragging a knee on a ST.
and whilst you're at it.....how about a 1098 review too?
get typing!

Hey Paul, Yep I have ridden one and if I had the $ I would buy one to ride the Turismo on... They are great bikes. I rode one for a stage on the Turismo last year and it was a blast. So nice not to get wind blown all the time and the plush suspension setup was very, well "plush".
If I could have a 2nd bike though I would get the Multi. Even more comfy to ride and it handles even better! But the front end is Butt ugly so I will wait for the new Strada Aperta and then move onto it....
Speaking of having more money, I would also have a 1098R, a DDRR16 and, ah stuff it. I am pretty happy on the S4RS
