08' S2R 1K. Ok so I took the mufflers of at the udder. 1. to see just how loud.  2. to see how the bike runs. At first, I was a little surprised at how well it sounded. yeah its loud, but no louder then the Harley guys down the street. So I took it for a ride around the block. It ran really good. Alittle popping on decel. but all in all really good. Next, put them back on to drive to work so that my neighbors won't kill me at 5:00 am. Took them off at work and drove home. I do believe it actually gained a little performance. maybe not power, but definately driveability. Question is, will this hurt the engine? (decreased back pressure) Any valve issues?. Next question has any one modified the stubby exhaust which is desinged for the S4R to fit the S2R 1K? my guess is that it is just a diameter difference. I am thinking of doing the mid-pipe and stubby exhaust but would like to know if flareing out mid-pipe is whats needed or what. Or is it a center to center issue?

rode 3,000 miles with out the mufflers, just udder.

Put the mufflers back on.

Theres no change in power, but there is a shift in power. the stock exahust (i have mine cored) made the bike much more torquey in the lower rpms. without the mufflers, the high end was a lot smoother. Now. not so much. I have a lot of inconsistency with the power delivery and idle (idle to about 4000rpm). Not sure if it was caused by the 6000 mile service (which was done 400 miles ago at 8500) or the mufflers.

I rode with the mufflers off for about 1000 miles. I noticed the popping on deceleration but the bike ran pretty good other than that. The dealership told me it wasn't recommended and to keep an eye on the operating temp. There definitely was some sort of shift in power like HeMan said. I now have the Termignoni shorty and the bike is running really good. There's nothing to the shorty and I have heard of people using it on the S2R. It's basically just a two into one with a carbon sleeve and a hefty price tag.

There is definately a difference in the outlet diameter between the S2R and the S4R bikes. The S4R is a few mm larger.

I def. agree with the "change in power" from going open udder to stock exhaust. My bike pulls much harder on the tollway with the open udder,but on the other hand pulls harder from a stop light with the mufflers installed. Same idea as running open headers on a race car. On a street car you need the power down low to get moving/traffic/passing/etc. On a racecar you are at high RPM's all the time so you want the exhaust to get outta the system ASAP.

So the question of whether I can run a mid-pipe and the shorty. I would have to figure out a way to flare the mid-pipe to allow for the larger diameter then it would definately need serious tuning to run well. Yes?

I don't think it would look right running the shorty without the udder. Although the udder is hideous, the carbon fiber on the exhaust is shaped specifically for it.

If you want a shorty/GP style muffler go look at the new GSXR stock mufflers.
I am sure you could score one offa Fleabay for cheap and core/gut it.
Just what I might do with my exhaust project over the winter..
