Might be bringing this old girl home tomorrow night to foster.  As long as Brian approves, that is.

"Heidi" is an emaciated stray that was picked up recently and apparently is super sweet:

Heidi's a cutie -- and a lucky girl to have you guys foster her. Hope Brian gives the dewclaws up.

Any input on nutritional needs of a dog in an underweight/emaciated state?  I'll definitely not let her gorge on food but feed a few times a day in small portions but anything specific to add to the food?

I've given boiled chicken breast and rice to my dogs when they've had upset stomachs and/or digestion issues (plus probiotics).  Will do some interwebbing to see what "they" say.

A little egg white won't hurt.

Raw?

Nah, I'll just cook a little extra with my breakfast and save it for meal time. Tear it into pieces and throw it in the bowl. Good protein and helps with a shiny coat.  ;)

half a cup of canned pumpkin in her dry food.  It is good fiber and helps with digestion.

Raw?

There are actually enzymes in raw eggs that inhibit the digestion of many vitamins (for humans and dogs). Raw eggs are basically an anti-nutrient. Not good for an under weight puppy.

One of our rescues was mighty skinny when we got him. we fed him small amounts about 5 times a day. Eventually he caught on that he had a steady food supply and he stopped gobbling so fast. Now we feed him as much as he can eat three times a day and he is a perfect weight. we just use a bowl that holds more than he could possibly eat, but don't free feed. Gotta wait until the dog is very confident that it is getting a steady supply of food though.

Good on ya' for doing fostering!   [thumbsup]

I want to cry.  Ok I did cry.

She is in such horrible shape and her breathing is so labored.
I seriously wonder if she's going to make it through the night.
Her lungs were checked before she left the vet's kennel
("kennel" is too good of a word for the place) and they said they are clear.
Something is causing her breathing to be so distressed. Heartworm negative,
I'm told. She drank and only ate a tiny bit.  I'm pissed that the clinic even
spayed her â€" she's so old....at least 10. At least she's warm and safe....

And Brian knows something is up with her as well. He sniffed her and is just
watching.  He knows.

Just seeing that second photo brought a tear to my eye.  Poor dog.   I hope you guys can do good things for her.  I know you will if she can stay strong enough!!
