Met a very cool little Corgi mix at a Mardi Gras party last week -- almost as wide as he was tall & long, he was in constant circulation, hoovering up dropped bits of jambalaya or shrimp, giving each and every party guest a three or four second staredown to see if there was a chance of a handout, and checking back every ten minutes to see if that status had changed.

Ann-Marie and I told our host that the dog's name should have been Roomba -- and it turns out that he almost got named that!!

That very much describes my mom's corgi, Luna.  Luna is a great dog - smart, well trained, affectionate.  Doesn't like kids or other dogs much - not a biter, but she will go and hide from both unknown kids and unknown dogs.  She gets daily exercise but still they need to be very careful with food 'cause she gains weight quickly - no scrap is missed in the kitchen!  She is totally a ratter as well - kills anything furry (or otherwise) and small in the yard and is fearless with her head.  Too fearless - she got bit by a rattlesnake a few years ago and still has the scars on her nose.

Here's another shot of Jack.  He had some health issues a couple of years ago.  We were out on a mountain bike ride and he started limping.  He walked it off and made it home without limping, but after that he would be fine, then limp, then be fine again.  We took him to the vet, and it turned out he had a luxating patella.  The vet recommended surgery to deepen the bone groove to better hold in the knee cap.  This was going to require him to be crated for 6 weeks for recovery, and he was likely to have arthritis afterwards.  My wife and I were pretty concerned as this sounded like pretty invasive treatment compared to the seemingly minor temporary discomfort he seemed to have when it luxated.  We didn't feel the need to do surgery right away so we decided to hold off and look for options. 

I'm really glad the holistic treatments worked for you and you were able to avoid surgery.   Grover also has luxating patellas, and I was fortunate that retiring him from lure coursing and agility minimized the issues.  I didn't want to have to put him through that recovery unnecessarily.  It's been several years now, he is 13 years old and still can go hiking or jogging in the hills with me every day.

She has no idea how lucky she is to be alive right now

Doh!  I'm glad my Maddie (1yr old black lab) doesn't pay attention to the moto gear.  I guess it helps that it's all stored in an area she can't get to.

I know your pain. Grace has taken to finding things to destroy while we're gone, even if we've got a rawhide set out for her. She got a hold of the digital camera last night. 

Today, she spent time with us at the fire hall. We're trying to control her spaz out sessions when she meets new people. So far the jumping is almost gone but she has an amazing ability to find people's crotches with her snout.

I think it's a girl dog thing, Watson specializes in it too.  She especially loves sticking her nose up skirts and dresses.

My dane Jasper isn't a crotch sniffer but he likes to nuzzle. Unfortunately when he bows  his head to nuzzle into you he is pretty much right at crotch height. And boy does he liek to just lean right in there. Ouchie.
