We found out last week that our 6 year old Basset Hound has canine lymphoma. Sounds like we have at most another 3-4 months with her. I don't know if I've ever cried like I did as the 2 of us were driving home from the vet...

However, you have to make the best of things...in this case, the best of the time we have left. So in honor of her last couple months, we're letting her enjoy the things she's always wanted and we've denied her to keep her healthy...cause hey, what's it going to do? kill her?  [laugh]

(I know, slightly morbid sense of humor...but if we don't laugh about it, it just makes us sad)

So last night...she had a cheeseburger for dinner  ;D

Don't worry...it was only a little. Didn't want to make her sick. Though I think she would of chowed the whole thing...but then there would been some of this  [puke]

Here's a photo of my wife, Molly (the basset), and Mason (english springer)

Sorry you got the tough news...and yes spoil the hell out of her while the time is still half-way good...and let her go when she gets too sick, don't keep her hanging on

A few years back our beloved GSD Chester was diagnosed with an inoperable abdominal tumor that was so large it was pressing on his diaphragm

that Saturday we took him home filled his kiddy pool and put his favorite toys in it....he climbed in and lay down playing...the buoyancy made him more comfortable...he was happy and he played

that Sunday I cooked him a prime rib and he devoured it

that Monday we had the vet come over and we put some towels down in the family room

and gave him the shot to send him back home,

we wanted him to go where he always felt safe and loved

We called it his Make-A-Wish weekend,

2 German Shepherds since...both went with abdominal tumors...

but my wife still gets wet-eyed when we look at pictures of Chester...he was out first GSD together

and he gave our respective children something they all loved together as a merged family

he served us well

and like any good dog he deserved a longer life

hang in there

Thanks for the thoughts everyone!

It's kind a weird thing. We took her in because there was something very wrong with her. You know something is up when a basset doesn't eat for a few days. Well they told us what was up and gave us some antibiotics, as she had a pretty good infection going (what had actually cause the loss of appetite). So she has actually gotten better, and if we didn't know what we were looking at, we'd think she's got years ahead still.

In some ways, I wish she hadn't gotten the infection, because we wouldn't know what was coming. But at the same time, I think it means we get to enjoy the time together while it last. And we know what the end result is, so when she gets bad, we won't be making her suffer trying to scramble to figure out whats wrong. There was talk of doggie chemo, but it was going to be 3 months of meds, for maybe an extra couple of months of life. I told my wife if it was me, I'd pass. So we're passing. At least the next coupe months will be good.

My sister was laughing at me because I was thinking of spending a couple grand on dog chemotherapy. I had to explain that my dogs are my kids. Much like her kids are to her....and truthfully, I like my dogs more than her kids  [laugh]

We lost our dog Owen to lymphoma in Jan of 2010. The prednisone really helped his quality of life for his last 3 months. On the way to the vets office on his final day we stopped and got 6 doughnuts all for him! He loved sweets. The vet had a good PNW IPA waiting for him to wash the doughnuts down with. His last hour was probably his favorite ever.

Beautiful photo of the three.  So sorry to hear about Molly (only 6?!) but how lucky she is to have you and to have such a wonderful life from start to finish.  So many don't have that good fortune.   Big hugs from our pack to yours.
