That sucks, but likely a good move. Pits are great dogs, but are best suited to single dog homes.

Can't you find a boxer in a shelter...or does your area have any boxer-specific rescues?

The real crappy part is my tenant (the owner of the dachshund) was all for at least letting them meet, her dog plays with pits at the dog park routinely and a pair of shepards at her parents even more frequently.  She was more upset than me that they wouldnt even permit the introduction. 

I can't find boxers anywhere near by.  The shelters around here are more than 50% filled with pits and pit crosses.  Breaks the heart.

Theres a breeder not far away in Maine that does Boxers and French Bulldogs, the dogs they have all look extremely well bread, but their website is pretty crappy, I really need to call them and take a ride up.

Ya, depends on the dog though. My lab/pit mix is super friendly, but is aggressive towards smaller dogs. She's OK until one of them challenges her at all...then it's on, and the smaller dog doesn't have a chance. Luckily she's only ever pinned them down, but I don't take chances anymore. Dogs about her size or larger she's fine with. It's weird.

Our shelters have a ton of pits as well...very sad. Sucks you can't find a rescue boxer...but good they aren't available though I guess. I hate to see dog in shelters.

They also have a stunning 4year old siberian which is what i grew up with. (3 of them over the years)  but I just cant do the shedding and the fact that they cant be off leash.  at all. ever.

I'm going to disagree with your generalization. I've had and have Pits and to say that is simply wrong. Pits are a very social and do very good in groups. Of coarse there are exceptions as with any breed.

I knew someone would say that. It's a generalization. Of course some are OK with other dogs (my sister-in-laws was a perfect example). Many are not though...or are just fine until something unexpected sets them off. Pits can be very dog-social, but some aren't...and it isn't rare for a pit to not be dog-social (even one that's extremely friendly with people, as most well-raised ones are). It's not their fault, or mean they're a bad dog...it's just been bred into them. A person should get to know their pit before having them live with another dog...especially if they'll be spending time together unsupervised, or if the pit's history is unknown (i.e., a rescue).

I love pits to death, but I know 2 personally that have om-nom'd little dogs.  one had to be put down after the second instance.

But this is 100% the reason why im leary about rescuing vs getting a pup from a breeder.  Especially with the little shit....er...Hunter in the house.

And I'm sure you could get a dog or people aggressive boxer,it all depends on their training.
There are no bad dogs just bad owners.

Don't give up on rescues too quick though. There are fantastic dogs waiting to be rescued.  Both of mine are rescues and I couldn't ask for better dogs.

My two current Pitts are both rescues and are awesome. Both have their TTs and now both have their CGCs. Don't give up on rescues!

just picked up this guy new years day.  He was at the rescue I used to spend a lot of time volunteering at before life got in the way...

some of the people at the rescue think he's a pit mix.  I think he's straight american bulldog.  you can't really tell so much in pics, but his head's more shaped like a mastiff's...and it's basically the size of a football helmet.  He was obviously someone's pet at some point. he walks on lead, knows more commands and so far is more obedient than any dog i've owned, though they tell me he's gotten into a few scuffles with some of the other dogs where he was being fostered...  he was taken from a high kill shelter at the beginning of the summer in upstate new york, but until now hadn't been able to find a home. 





right now we're calling him dino because that's what they were calling him at the foster home, or barney because that's what my dad would've called him.  he doesn't seem to mind.  any dmf suggestions for a name?
