He had lots of health issues. Two serious bouts with Lymes Disease, some other tick borne disease I can't spell and he was diabetic and blind for the last 4 years. He dealt with the blindness and shots pretty well but then he developed a hernia in his esophagus and couldn't keep anything down. He lived to retrieve but could no longer see well enough to do much of it. I'd wind up and fling that tire out in the yard and he could hear it hit and find it. I put him down in Late October and hadn't wanted to look at the pics until now. I work from home and spent more time with him than with people. Starting to look for pups again - still don't know what I'm going to get. I've had two Chesapeakes - they are a hardheaded, grumpy dog - I'd like to get another Springer/Lab mix - one of those was the best dog I ever had. Vizslas are on the list, Griffen Wirehairs - also thinking about protection dogs - maybe a Rottweiler or Cane Corso - also just saw some videos of Plummer Terriers ratting in England - way different but that might be interesting too?!

The price you pay for all that unconditional love is that they will probably die before you do.
As far as food is concerned, the next dog I get isn't getting a bit of commercial dogfood. I started making my own and it seems they do better on it. Dogs didn't evolve eating Alpo. Cost is really a push depending on what you use and how you acquire it. It takes a little time, but I can make enough for a week or two in an hour or so and freeze what I don't need immediately. A lot of commercial dog foods are ways for the company to get rid of byproducts that would otherwise have to be disposed of.

Don't rule out Dobies. They are amazing dogs, form incredible bonds with you, are super affectionate and are just big goofballs in general. All that stops when there is someone they don't know lurking about though, as that becomes the focal point of their attention.

If you are looking at bigger dogs and like terriers, I would recommend checking out Airedales.
Our two goof balls are great. They need daily exercise to keep them happy and make great guard dogs.
I'll walk/run them together alone and people often cross the street when they see us coming.
They have a very keen sense of who belongs in their territory/space and who doesn't, even in public places.

Yeah - Kind of stinky is kind of an understatement. Its one of the reasons that vizslas are on the list - they have very little odor. The wife said the next dogs had to be less smelly and less growly. I'd like to get a pair of dogs I think - one hunting style and one watchdog type. Having them together and having them trained differently will be a challenge I am thinking through now before I pull the trigger on some pups. A friend of ours had Dobermans - they were great for her. So many pure breeds have been thoroughly messed up - the best dogs I have had were mutts. It will probably come down to running into something interesting by chance. I saw some videos on Plummer terriers on utube. They are not available to my knowledge in the US. They have a very interesting history in England where they are used for ratting. It started me thinking about raising some and providing ratting services to organic farms in the area. Barter some artisan cheese for rodent removal services. It would be a unique sideline. They are a cross between Jack Russel Terriers, Beagles, Bull Terriers and one other I think. Totally different dogs than I am used to. |

Good luck on your search.. I've said it before.. Our dog only eats raw.. want to get a grinder soon and grind up bigger bones.. for now her bone intake only comes from drumsticks
