My wife's daughter has two Am Staffs and they don't have a mean bone in their bodies. The only thing even remotely dangerous about them is that when they see me they get excited because they know it's okay to play rough with me and I've gotten head butted and knocked on my ass. 

My Pit/Akita mix is a bit agressive and territorial with strangers but that's fine with us, so are we.

Greta is deathly afraid of the Garbage Truck, but keeps a very careful eye on the dirtballs working on the truck.

Her protective side is starting to show; it is pretty cool.

I didn't mean to lump the dobbies in with the pitt/rottie convo. I was just quoting your statement regarding the pits.

Not true.  They actually make very POOR watch dogs.  You are correct in saying they are animal aggressive, but at the same time they are human submissive, and are known for being very good with children.  Just as animal aggression has been bred into them, human submissiveness has also been bred into them so they could be controlled (and trained).  Human aggression is caused by abuse...period.  A pitbull with a good home life DOES NOT have to be trained NOT to bite people...that's f'ing ridiculous! A human aggressive pitbull should be put down.  I'm talking real aggression, not just a scared dog (like the one in your patrol car).

Didn't say anything about being a watch dog, just protecting property. Property could be you, a ball, a bone, etc. You are right a pit agressive to humans should be put down. Unfortunately, that's most pits that I come across. I'll believe that they don't need to be trained not to be agressive toward people when I don't hear about yet another pit attack for a few years.

They are very loyal and will protect their owners, as will most any dog.  To cite your black lab example, there was a story here recently where a black lab bit a guy who was trying to rape it's owner.  During the interview a couple days later the lab was acting like a goofy, silly black lab...friendly as can be.  Th point is almost ALL dogs will protect their owners...larger, more powerful ones just happen to be better at it then something like a JRT (although they're tough little bastards). Anyway, I do agree that Pits take a special owner...and a good portion of their owners are douchebags that create aggressive dogs through abuse.

My point about the labs was that they are generally good natured and trusting. Of course a lab (or just about any breed) will try to protect it's owners. And yes, the JRT is a tough little bastard that has about the same tempermant in a fight as a pit. It's just easier to handle a 15 lb JRT. I also agree with your statement about most of the owners.

Bad form pt.  I don't think Scott expressing his opinion is politics, personal agenda, or stiring up shit.  I think we're having a personally reasonable and calm differing of opinion, simple as that.

Pits are naturally dominant and agressive. They are one of the most loyal breeds you can find. They will fight to the death to protect their owners or property. That's the differance. That's their natural instinct. That's how they will be if not trained NOT to do it. Most other dogs don't need to be trained not to attack strange dogs or people. 90%+ of dog owners don't train their dog's to the point that they have total control of them. I've trained mine everyday for over four years and she still sometimes trys to do her own thing. She still sometimes gets into a scuffle with another dog, even though that is just "not like her". I can deal with her though. Dealing with a 80+ lb pit or rott is a different thing.

I'm fine with people that want to have a pit or rott at their home. I just don't believe there is a place for them in public settings. Have I been around "the good ones"? Not many. The majority of pit's I have encountered (other then the puppies) at the beach, park, or on duty has been somewhat to very agressive. I actually have had better luck with rotties, probably about 50% of the ones I have encountered were gentle.

100% agreed.  My time with pits has been almost entirely in private.  My ex took her pair to the dog park, but *only* late at night/when it was empty.  If a strange dog/person arrived, she'd put them back on the leash.  These were well behaved and socialized dogs, but it was a matter of "better safe than sorry".  I've always anticipated that I would behave the same in my ownership of one, allowing them to get exercise and socialize, but only in the safest and most controlled settings.

It's not that I disagree that the breeds take work to own, it's that I don't believe they should be discriminated against by civic or commercial entities.  As we've touched on, that's too close to politics and I'll leave it at that.

Corey, I know you have met Scott in person, and I hear from people I *know* (met in real life and are good people) that Scott is a nice, stand-up guy in person.  I don't doubt that, the sources that I heard that from are good people.

He *does* have a very abrasive online personality, and he does stir shit up.  Talking about shooting dogs and how certain breeds shouldn't be allowed to be in public places-period, is something you don't bring up in a thread unprovoked. 

His tone the whole time he has been here has been abrasive and cavalier.  I can do without the arrogance and the disdain he clearly shows for many members here.  (DML history, ect)
