My 2.5 year old amstaff mix tore her ACL a couple months back.  We can't get her to settle down enough to let it heal and have been advised off the surgery because of this and her breed doesn't take the surgery well.  We have tried vet prescribed downers and she doesn't react well to them at all.

Yes, it is a schedule IV but a very useful medication, just like others that are in the same classification because of the junkies of the world who need xanax to come off their cocaine benders. I legally possess this medication.

As for addicting....that is all in the use of the individual and what it is being used for.

Probably not a bad answer (as I see it)...just a last resort one. A low-impact physical activity would be the 1st option if one can be found. 

that is the way I was looking at it. I was not suggesting drugging the dog the entire time, but a half a pill when the dog is really amped up could be VERY beneficial.

little dog got some kind of worms (I think there roundworms) 

yesterday, he puked up a grip, little nasty worm or two crawling around in it. 

no idea where he got it..the only thing I can think, is maybe he picked it up from some of the yote' crap that shows up in the back yard from time to time. other then that I have no clue.

he's feeling real shitty today, he's usually running around with a tennis ball.. now he's just sleeping by my desk. At least he ate a little this afternoon.

the vet's running a test and should have the results tomarrow morning.

What sort of worm guard is your dog on? Do you get annual de-worming done?

he's just on heartgard...

he's only been on it for 1 month, since he's only 7mo old

depending on what the results are they'll perscribe a dewormer. I'm mostly concerned because people can get these worms too (mostly children) and lots of customers and their kids come threw here and play with him.

Other then heartworm, I'm not sure there is something to prevent worms in general..

I'll know more tomarrow when the vet gets the results back.

Tapeworms is spread to dogs through fleas so a good flea preventative (frontline or advantage) is a good idea too.

Its good at preventing it, it won't get rid of them if there already there.

I think he got them before I started him on the heartgard, since he's only been on it like a month.

He's on Frontline. I didn't think about the Tapeworm, out here plague is a bigger concern...

If your dog has worms, you can buy dewormer at Walmart or your pet store. It is the same shit the vet gives you and about 1/4 of the price.

I am trying to think of the comparison card at the locally owned pet store we use (it is more $ than the chains, but it keeps my money with a great locally owned shop).

Around here, we have a shit ton of ticks and a large deer population, so our dogs need that protection.

I believe Frontline also kills larvae and Advantage does not.

Yeah, generally in early summer, when it's hot and dry, my pup will get 'em too, but I still think the med helps. At that time of year, I'll generally treat my yard with an ant treatment that has the same active ingredient as the Advantix - keeps fleas away as well as ants.
