I have never had her teeth cleaned.  Last time the vet recommended it, but we talked and decided id try feeding her some greenies for a while to see how it went.

She was eating one yesterday and got a chunk stuck in her mouth (think peanut butter)  After a while of watching her try to dislodge it I felt bad and went to clear it out for her.

Thats when I saw the tooth.  It's one of the ones toward the back and it's gross looking.  It was before a little, but it's worse now.  I noticed a crack and fiddled with it. . .

the whole outer shell of that tooth moved when I put my fingernail in there and lifted.

It's not really a crack, more like a step.

That said, she's not in any discomfort that I can tell, and she didn't care about me lifting up on that step.

She just wanted my fingers out of her mouth

You can also just turn away from them and ignore them when they jump. Dogs jump for attention (be it good or bad). If you turn away and ignore them eveytime they jump, and pet/praise them when all 4 are on the ground, they very quickly learn not to jump.

This has always worked great for me.  The only problem is training friends to do it too - dogs don't jump on me but are happy to jump on others.

Took Alex to the vet today, not really sure what is wrong with him until results come back.

Over the past few months, we have noticed he has been breathing a lot harder than he should be.

Vet was concerned, so they ran a battery of tests.

They think it might be a fungus that is on his lungs. It has caused his esophagus/wind pipe from being straight to 90 degrees, which would explain the breathing issues.

Hopefully this is it.

Other possibility is cancer on or around his lungs, which is not good.

All hopes it is the first and after talking with my Uncle who is a Vet, we feel much better it is the fungus (one of its nicknames is the Ohio Valley Fungus, which is where we live).

Hoping for the best with our little guy. He is only 4yrs old.

True. Other people are the hardest part about training a dog though!

Greenies can cause blockages. Not super common, but it can happen. Nylabones are a better alternative IMO.

Unfortunately one of my whippets has managed to break 2 teeth on Nylabones so I can't recommend them either.

Weird. Both of my dogs chew them, and Gabby chews so hard that she can wear out their hardest one in a couple weeks.

So do my dogs...that's how I know when to throw them away.

They make a large one that looks like a Turkey leg. It must taste like one too, because Gabby buries it for a couple weeks every time I get her one!   That and the real raw bones I used to get her are the only ones she's ever buried (which is why I stopped with the raw bones...they are FOUL after being buried for a week or two  ).

They make a large one that looks like a Turkey leg. I don't throw them away at that point as that is how Greta likes them.

I throw them away when they start getting shorter and she could potentially swallow one, but is not likely.

she is weird with her bones too. She currently has 3 or 4 nyla bones and one synthetic bone (like I got Brian).

She hides them all over the house, but then will put them all in a group together or scatter around the downstairs so she always has access to them.


my favorite position is when she walks by and drops one on the coffee table by our couch.

Then she will randomly walk by and pick it up.

I would keep an eye on the tooth and check frequently for any discharge or foul smell. If you have a vet you trust won't try and fleece you, it might be worth getting checked out for piece of mind.

I do trust my vet.  There's no discharge and her breath stinks the same as it always has.

Vet is recommending a cleaning if things get any worse and to keep my eye on it in the meantime.

that sounds reasonable for sure.


The catch 22 of chewing is that it's great for cleaning the dogs teeth and a good stress reliever, but if the dog is a hard chewer, he/she will eventuall damage teeth. Even nylabones have recently been proclaimed by "experts" as being potentially damaging to teeth.

A couple of my dogs have lost teeth on nylabones over the years.
