We gave in..........

Meet Taggart Alex xxxxxxxxxxxx<Kennel Names the rest> (we will call him Tag). He is a six week old male.

Goes in next Thursday or Friday for ear cropping and then we get him 2-3 weeks after that.

Since he will be shipped here, they wait one week til after ear stitches are removed, so hence the extra week.

Bring on the puppy days!!!!

Nice pup Judd.  Why not keep the ears natural though?  It can be fun that way, see?

Darmah Dog approves of this statement, and of natural ears...

We liked the cropped look of Doberman's because that is AKC Breed Standard.

I am not dissing on your Dobe at all, I just think Doberman's and Boxer's should have their ears done.

If it anyone calls it inhumane..........talk to me or show your animal had an issue.

Greta left after her ear crop with no pain meds and just some antiboitics due to all the stitches.

She turned out just dandy.

But that is not what this thread is about.

We are excited to have our new family member with us very shortly. It will not replace Alex, no dog will ever do that.

But we love having two dogs and our little Greta needs a playmate.

More pictures to come as the breeder sends them to us.

D*mn!  Is he part Rot?! Look at those paws!   :D

How big are his parents?

I'm with you on breed standards.  Although the Danes looks cute when the ears aren't cropped..if we get one or a Neopolitan Mastiff, they will be "altered" to breed standards.

It may be my utter lack of knowledge but....how on earth could a standard for a breed involve something that doesn't occur in nature?

If the state had not cut funding for the mental institutions, this project could never have happened.

Function.

Most breeds were bread for certain jobs.  In the case of the Dane, their ears were originally cropped to prevent tearing when hunting wild boar.  Today, it's purely cosmetic..

unless you actually use them to hunt wild boar.

Sort of how you continue to let the hair grow in on your li'l hobbit feet despite the fact that you now wear shoes?

I see now. Thanks  :)

They also cropped the ear for sound localization.  The idea is to "catch" sound with the cropped ear basically the same as what our ear or the "pinna" does.  The cropping of the ear on a Dane also gives it a taller and more intimidating appearance to would-be intruders/burglars.

The other dog I am looking at..

The Neopolitan or Italian Mastiff..

Although cropping the ears has always been customary for the Mastino especially in Italy, it also serves a functional purpose in that cropped Neo ears rarely get infected. This is a surgical procedure performed on the anaesthetised puppy around the age of 7 - 8 weeks of age. As with all pendulous eared dogs, Neos which have intact ears are more susceptible to ear infection. So the golden rule is to clean your dogs ears out weekly, with disposable wipes (available from your pet suppliers).

The breeder also does Rots, but no, he is a pure bred doberman. We bought him from one of the best known kennels in the US.

He is a large male. They had 3 large males and one superior male. The superior was estimated to be between 130-140lbs at adult weight.

This big little guy should be around 95-110 per their best estimate of the parents.

IZ addressed it. Working dogs get different things done.

Dobe's get their tail docked, declaws removed, and ears cropped. They were bred as military/protector dogs, so anything less likely to be grabbed was done.

Look at most well bred Labs; they NEVER have a declaw. They get snagged on brush, etc and can cause damage.

But in our case....we aren't fighting or using ours as a protector, but we still like to keep our Doberman's breed standard, which involves the crop.

A friend of mine called it "mutiliation" of the animal.

I guess he didn't see Greta after hers...........

She was in more pain from her spaying then ears.

Please no more debating this. Go back several pages when we got Greta and the topic was addressed then.

Sorry, wikipedia was wrong again.  ;)

Dewclaw
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A dewclaw is a vestigial digit of the foot of many mammals, birds, and reptiles  (including some extinct orders, like certain theropods). It grows higher on the leg so that in digitigrade species, when the animal is standing, it does not make contact with the ground.
