'fallout' is radioactive dust / dirt etc. produced when the nuclear processes occur near the ground (i.e. embedding
neutrons into the surrounding material).  in a (high altitude) air burst, the neutrons are largely absorbed by
the intervening atmosphere.

You answered what I was wondering about, but,... Just curious...

why/how would you have known that?

NeufUnSix

Honestly I'd be more worried about poorly maintained nuclear reactors in the East than leftover bombs. They still dig up bombs in France and Belgium from the First World War, it's not just the former USSR that continues to be a risk. In fact there is an undetonated super-mine underneath a French farm that they can't remove safely, so the owner of the property just has to live knowing that an errant lightning strike could blow his house sky high (it's happened before).

Nuclear wise, there can always be another Chernobyl, which was relatively well contained for a near-total meltdown. It would be some bad shit if there were a complete meltdown that escaped containment.

Well, the nuclear explosion would likely yeild high energy (fast) neutrons which would make it to the ground. Neutrons are not usually a problem unless ingested or inhaled...
